I think the Oilers should look at using Puljujärvi to shake Haydn Fleury loose from Carolina. There's no room on the blueline for him there and they may want to see if they can rekindle the WJC chemistry Puljujärvi had with Aho and make a Finnish top line.

It would be a huge win if they could snag fleury or jake bean from Carolina.

I don't think they could get Bean, but Fleury could probably be had for Puljujärvi + a decent pick (2nd rounder perhaps?)

Well he said he wants a trade now, so that leaves the Oilers having to make a move

Did Colorado move Duchene when he asked for a trade?
Did Winnipeg move Trouba when he asked for a trade?

Puljujarvi is an RFA, he doesn't call the shots here. What JP REALLY needs right now is not a new team, its a new agent.

Bean maybe, Fleury is a nothingburger. And even Bean isn't very useful for the Oilers, they have several LHD prospects just as good and zero room on the NHL roster.

Naw, they don't have to make a move. Should they? Yes. Will they? Probably. Do they have to? No.

Man, Edmonton is just a jerky organization though. Too many old Oilers in the front office that think the game hasn't changed.

Because he's not being utilised in Edmonton and feels like he has a better chance at becoming a good player elsewhere.

New coach, new GM. Give them a chance.

Or would he rather be trade to, say, LA? LOL

Hopefully so for the tormented Oilers fans. Until the Kevin Lowe's of the world are gone, it's going to be tough sledding.

I'm taking about the league that doesn't have control over what players do. Suspensions obviously don't work most of the time.

just because you don't think they work doesn't mean you don't issue them.

Fleury probably wouldn't even make the Oilers AHL team.

I disagree. He just played a prominent role on the Calder cup winning team. The Oilers also could also go after Bean as Carolina likely has to choose between which of these two guys they keep, and which is used to bolster their forward ranks soon. I do agree that he wouldn't be a lock to play on the big club until some of the Oilers older players are moved, but then again Puljujärvi also bounced between the NHL club and the AHL.

Sure he did. But IMO all 3 of the Oilers AHL LD are better and/or have a higher ceiling, I wouldn't take away their playing time for Fleury. Just going off boxcars:

Caleb Jones, AHL: 50, 6-23-29 +16
Lagesson, AHL: 67, 8-19-27 +25
Samorukov, OHL: 59, 10-35-45 +36 and beastmode in the playoffs: 24, 10-18-28 +18

Fleury, AHL: 28, 2-8-10 +0 and in the playoffs: 11, 2-4-6 +7

Fleury is a 2014 draft pick same as Lagesson, yet putting up worse numbers in the AHL. Jones is a year younger (2015) while Samorukov is 3 years younger (2017). I find it doubtful that Fleury takes ice-time away from any of these guys. Unless one of them gets called up to the NHL or traded, there's no room in the Oilers AHL organization for Haydn Fleury.

I think Jones is better right now and most Oilers ACGM's have him at the NHL level next year. My thought was that the Oilers would be interested in bringing on another LD prospect (Fleury or Bean) to push the ones they have and have a winning culture down on the AHL team. I also thought that it would be a fair return for Puljujärvi. Fleury did have a down year but you can't discard the fact that he has an NHL season under his belt while those guys have played a total 17 games at the end of a lost year (Jones). It would be rare that all of Jones, Lagesson, and Samorukov are NHL'ers so I thought exchanging former top 10 picks for one another would be a good approach and value for the Puljujärvi trade.

Perhaps you are right and they should instead find a change of scenery move at forward instead as evidently the Oilers poor defense at the NHL level does not permeate down to their minor league team. Perhaps the Jet's would bring him in to work his way up to Laine's RW, for Roslovic who is also rumoured to be unhappy with his current team. The Oilers would definitely have to add a decent pick as Roslovic has been much better than Puljujärvi at the NHL level thus far.

I understand your approach. My take: Bean I would be interested in, Fleury not so much. But the fact is that it's probably that all 3 of our AHL LHD do make the NHL roster, Holland has already stated that he feels Lagesson is NHL-ready, Jones has already proved capable of playing 3rd pairing minutes in the NHL and Samorukov has been progressing at an incredible pace since his draft year. He might end up better than both. Here are a couple of interesting articles on Samorukov:

https://thehockeywriters.com/oilers-prospect-update-dmitri-samorukov/
https://edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/nhl/cult-of-hockey/edmonton-oilers-pick-dmitri-samorukov-rated-second-best-nhl-prospect-at-memorial-cup

So LHD is literally the lowest priority on the list.

I agree, I think something like this could work well for both sides. Burakovsky is another name I've heard mentioned, as well as Fabbri and Nylander. Not sure I'd want Nylander though...
