Or the asking price is too high. People want Kreider but don't want to give up a first for him.

Apparently (I think it was LeBrun that said it) the Colorado deal was for a prospect and a 1st, but they were only willing to give next year's first instead of 16 this year.

But going back to the original post, it doesn't matter how much room they have now, if Panarin says he wants to sign with them they will make room. Whether that's through trades (Kreider can still be moved, Strome definitely has at least some trade value and I refuse to believe no one would be interested in a 3 million dollar Kevin Shattenkirk), buyout (Smith) or bridging RFAs (I don't think Buch agrees to anything over 2 years unless it's a substantial overpay anyway).

May end up being another Zuccarello situation. Having to wait it out with him until the Trade Deadline to increase his value. Definitely not ideal.

That's a lot of moving parts. Earlier in the Offseason (and leading up to the Draft) I could believe it. Now we're about 3 days away from the official opening period to sign UFA's, and there has still been absolutely no movement.

I think they will get much better value at the Deadline. But you still have to deal with a player for half the year who knows he's a Dead Man Walking. It's a situation they wanted to avoid after what Zuccarello went through last Season.

What's wrong a dead man walking? Players are trying to for a good maybe their last contract.. So they will hardly be dead. Every year there are about three players per team that are going to be UFAs, so it's not a unique situation to the player or team.

Lol, Vancouver gave up a 1st and more for J.T Miller, who is not even half the player Kreider is, so if teams want Kreider they will definitely give up a 1st and more for him.

Dude, they literally talked to him yesterday. It makes sense that they wouldn't move 10 million in contracts for a guy before they get an inkling of whether he's planning on signing with them or not.

Ehhh, Vesey and Namestnikov don't have long term value. Could have moved them regardless.

Shattenkirk causing a logjam on D, could have moved him regardless.

I could see pausing on Kreider if you are unsure about Panarin, but not the others.

Having him locked up for 4 more years helped, but yes, I see your points.

1) that was considered an overpayment for Miller by many. 2) Miller is versatile. While he's better on the wing he can play center. 3) He has term on his contract. Kreider does not. That's why Kreider doesnt have a ton of value. You're not going to get a blue chip prospect and a top end pick for him.

I really wanted Newhook too. It's unfortunate on that one.. i died a little inside when I didn't hear the trade announcement at 15 when both Newhook, Caufield and Krebs were available. Would've taken 15, 16, or 17 for kreider.

1) Yes, I know it was a complete overpayment, but it happened so IMO there will be GMs that will pay more for Kreider.
2) Once again Miller is not even half the player Kreider is no matter how "versatile" his position is.
3) Any team that will try to trade for Kreider now in the summer will obviously probably ask to negotiate a long-term deal with Kreider before trading for him, (and there are teams that will throw a lot of cash at him and a market made, look at Philly with Hayes.)

If an extension is in place, you're still probably not going to get as much value as you want. Kreider is good but nowhere near Mark Stone's level who got a top prospect and 2 second round picks. Subban was had for a couple lower level players and multiple 2nds and a right handed offensive defenseman is way more valuable than a left winger.
