No didn't sign him because I think they won't make an offer, which I think he just becomes a UFA?
Not sure I understand your logic. In your comments section you were crowing about how Toronto managed to move Zaitsev and actually get back an asset for him. Instead, if Ceci becomes a UFA, this means you moved Zaitsev and had to give up additional compensation to move him and get nothing back in return. Which is what most non leaf fans were saying all along, that Zaitsev has negative value and it would cost you to move him. Regarding Marleau, most people did feel his contract would be hard to move, and it likely would have been if his wife didn't decide she wanted to get back to the west coast so bad. Once that news came out, most posters said it would cost Toronto to move him, and I would say a first round pick was quite a cost.
So to summarize, if this plays out the way it is suggested here, Toronto gives up a first round pick, Marleau, Zaitsev, and Brown, and has no tangible assets to show for it. Yes, they do have cap space, so certainly something is gained. However, as someone said above, team is not as strong as last year, and they only made play offs by 4 points then. This upcoming year will be key for growth with some of the young players, but it should pay off for them down the road. Making the play offs next year should be a realistic goal.
