The best part is: There are rumblings that he is willing to take a huge paycut to stay in Toronto.. like 5aav kind of paycut. I personally think the reason we have heard nothing about Gards since July 1st tells me he is waiting for something. (Leafs to move Ceci and guarantee space to sign him).

While I think it's only a small possibility that Jake is still holding a candle for Toronto, if that *were* the case, the hold up would definitely be the Marner negotiations. They can't sign Gardiner until they know Marner's AAV.

This also still doesn't work. No team is going to go into the season with less than $1M in cap space, and only 1 healthy roster reserve. Yes there's ways around it, but it's very risky. Hyman and Dermott are also on IR so players are needed to fill their spots which puts Toronto over the cap.

Personally, I wouldn't be shocked to see Gardiner re-sign in Toronto. Especially since Muzzin and Barrie are likely gone to UFA next season. But more roster shuffling than this still needs to be done. Right now I'd say it's closer to a 10% chance Gardiner comes back, if he does it's around $5M aav and probably another forward has to go for cap reasons too. Unlikely it happens

I am affected by the bug that prohibits profile pic changing and have been for months (I have tried to change it like 3 times over a few months).
So he's staying for a while unless @Banks or another mod knows how to fix the bug.

And you don't need to move another forward. Either bridge Marner or get him on a contract that is actually close to his value (looking at Aho here).

& again.. no team is going to enter the season with that little of cap space. You have Dermott and Hyman on the roster, they'll be on IR until Decemberish so they'll need replacements and you have $100K to sign guys. Season opening LTIR isn't the same as LTIR so when Hyman and Dermott come off the IR they're screwed for the cap.. it's bad cap management.

The only reason Leafs are still an option for Gardiner is he hasn't received the 7 X 7 offer his agent sprouted would be coming. Gee, I don't mind Jake but the Leafs can't really want him long term can they?
Rather have Ceci and see what he can do for a year. Leafs can resign Ceci or let him go. The cap space will be important to spend wisely . Jake...you know at age 28 he isn't getting better. Let him play elsewhere.

You put them on LTIR on day one and call up Agostino and marmar. Problem solved.
Or they could run with 2 extras and bank up the cap space.
Plenty of easy solutions

again, season opening LTIR is different than regular IR. It's a **** of thing to try to explain, but it screws Toronto over by the end of the season. Basically the only relief Toronto gets at the end of the season when the cap resets is just the time that the players missed. Then at the end of the season the time they played counts towards the cap that was set on opening night, putting them over the cap and forces them to pay overages. That's why no team goes into the season with so little of cap space.

So the only "easy solution" is to wither not sign Gardiner, or move out someone else's contract to be cap compliant.

... the reason why your tag line is "LongtimeLeafsufferer".. you'd rather have a terrible d-man than a actual good one? It's been long rumoured that Gardiner is willing to stay long term in Toronto for cheap. It was talked about around $5-$5.5M as long as it was the full term. So you wouldn't rather have Gardiner for $1M more than Ceci when Gardiner is miles better? Gardiner may not "get any better at age 28" but for what he is, he's pretty damn good and would be welcomed back to Toronto. Or you can keep suffering.. seems like a pretty easy choice.

Another solution is to bridge Marner.
There are plenty of options here man (and honestly, I think I'd like Marner's contract to come up 1st next time around).

Not saying its not an option and not saying its not the worst option.. but that's dependant if Marner is willing to accept it. By all reports right now, he's not. & the player has the final say so I wouldn't hold out for that right now.

I would. Jake clearly is holding out for something and we need to hold firm on Mitch anyway. Tell him its a bridge or he isn't a Leaf if it comes down to it. 3@7.5 and run wild. The Aho contract more or less shatters their camps delusions on their value both to them and the rest of the league, and so simply wait them out until Marner realises that he wants to be a Leaf. Its not like anyone is going to OS him for 10+aav.

Marner still holds out to get more, a bridge deal would likely happen around training camp, when Gardiner is long gone. Until then, Marner holds out to get his money. It's the player's choice where he wants to play, if no other team offers him that then he could choose to hold out like Nylander and push Toronto until the end and risk not having him at all or having to trade him.
