The Matthews deal wasn’t that bad. Term sucks but the cap hit is fair in my opinion.

agreed. But guess what? Term is really really really important. Hence why Matthews was asking for 13.8 for an 8 year deal. 5 years at 11.634 is bonkers money. It's effectively the biggest contract signed in NHL history.

soooo you agree with me? I think Matthews is worth 11.5, but giving him that over 5 years was a hilariously bad decision.

Marner will likely settle for 11 million over 5 years. A hometown discount would be a 6th year but that is not looking good.
Dubas set the bar and Marner wants to be treated fairly .

I love the people saying 8 or 9 million. He already was offered 10 million and countered with 12.5.
Dubas set the market rate and the minimum now is 11 million. Just like Mathews and Tavares

was referring to marner not being worth 11.5. i think the matthews deal should've been 6 years at least.

if i had to guess dubas purposefully gave matthews a blank check so he didn't have to deal with both of them this offseason.

I think Marner at 10.5x5 is fair, given the matthews contract.

realistically, I can guarantee you that the term will not be 4 years. There isn't a snowballs chance in hell that Dubas offers four years. I think it's more likely that he retires from the NHL and plays in Russia than him getting four years.

I thought so too at first. And then I thought about how long the team was without a #1 centre, and then how competitive they could be with two #1's...and I realized it was much smarter to overpay a little now for the opportunity.

Marner is another story.

Shorter term is smart, these guys learned from Crosby and OV's "mistakes".

9M x 5 has to be a number that neither side is happy with but both can live with.
