What is this Oiler madness that Nurse deserves 8m on his next contract? If by some miracle he is deserving of such a contract, isn't that a good thing? Oilers sign him as RFA or get true 8m in a trade.

Less Oiler madness and more the fact that Nurse is on line to ask for the same as Trouba if he progresses a little this year. Even last year was pretty comparable (Trouba: 8-42-50, 22:53min, Nurse: 10-31-41, 23:49min). I hope he comes in cheaper, but we just don't know. The worry with him is that he is not really a powerplay expert or PK expert, and his possession ability to control the ice is average.

I am very pleased he's an Oiler, but wonder if there will be a better fit eventually if some teams value him as a number one LHD. For the Oilers, Klefbom is still a better overall defenseman IMO. There is no way I would trade Nurse unless: 1, we can get a legit top pair RHD in return, or 2, we can get a legit top line winger on a good contract in return.

Seeing the reaction to Hamilton is interesting. I know he has his warts too, but brings a different offensive style and AMAZING possession numbers. But happy to know most people think Nurse is worth more.

Thanks for your insight. Nurse's contract leverage will be based on how he compares to all NHLers. We'll see how Trouba works out, but he is being paid about the 7th highest Dman....which is right now is too high IMO, so I can't see how Nurse can justify that money.
Actually Carolina seems solid at LHD long term but at RHD that only have Pesce locked up long term...Faulk and TVR are UFA next summer and Hamilton just two years till UFA, so if anything I think keep Hamilton.
Love to see the Oilers solidify their team and defence....Nurse, Klefholm, Bouchard, maybe Larsson and Bear long term...that would be a good I would think. For Oilers fans, let's hope Holland can start spending cap$$$$ wisely. Out of playoff teams shouldn't be at the cap.

Nurse would never get a top pairing D in return. The oils only hope would be a swap of handedness of equals (Hamonic for example).
Would love to see something along the lines of Roslo+ as a base for Nurse though. Roslo would absolutely thrive in Edmonton alongside either McJesus or Drai.

You said it your self, he isn't a PP QB, not really effective PK guy and is average possession wise. If he is looking to make 8 million a season with that sort of body of work, trade him for the best package you can get because an average defender isn't worth 8 million a year. The comparison to Trouba is where I am getting lost, Trouba is a definitive top pair defenceman, who can chip in offensively and plays a very good defensive game. Nurse is not Trouba, he's probably going to have to go short term on his next deal because he doesn't have enough in the bank to force a team to give him a long term deal. Don't worry about Nurse, hope he progresses and shows potential to be a top pair guy, until he does that, he's a decent top 4 defenceman and shouldn't get paid more than 5 million a season.
