Keep dreaming, roster size of 20 at that cap hit is also a disaster.

It makes very little sense for Buffalo to take Laine for cap reasons. Unless they're trading Reinhart next year for a younger guy on an ELC. Add in what Winnipeg is going to ask for him it's not even worth it. I would guess it's not worth it to most teams for the same reason. I bet Winnipeg has no choice but to pay him and keep him because they probably wont get what they want back in a trade due to Laine's Cap Hit.

He is an impossible player to value.

Until December 1st 2018 he looked like a generational goal scorer. This generations Ovechkin. His goalscoring was literally incredible and he was a franchise player.

In a tier with Matthews to be a franchise player, on pace for incredible performance.

Then he hit a ****ing wall. Had a terrible second half.

Now he's impossible to judge. Winnipeg would be nuts to trade him and not expect the return of the 2.3 seasons of generational talent. Anyone else won't want to pay generational returns because he has 2/3s of a season of garbage.

His shooting is the only thing he has going for him. That skill alone doesn't make him a generational talent. It would be silly to trade two key young pieces+ for him.

He appeared to be a generational goal scorer. He still likely is.

You can say one dimensional if you want, but if he truly is the player he appeared to be then yes he is worth a couple top prospects and a first. If he isn't that, then no he isn't.

Put another way would you do this trade for Pavel Bure?

Laine's first two seasons were before Bure entered the league. And if you control for goals scored per game I think Laine comes ahead.
