You just murdered the Oilers top prospects list, and sold off our future farm for... Duclair, Tierney and... Toffoli (for one year, I might add)...

Back away from the keyboard... And stop trying to perpetuate the Oilers struggles.

There's no such thing as a quick fix or quick re-tool for the Oilers. The truth is, they should be signing a third line centre to let them compete in a way that they're not just basement dwellers this year. It's a development year for the prospects who are almost NHL ready, and a salary / cap clearing year. Oilers, and their fans, need to bite the bullet one more year and will be in a good position to significantly improve for the 2020-21 season with a ridiculous amount of cap space, and more insight into what their prospects will look like (can decide who to keep, and who to trade).

The real question here is what do you think they’ll do with puljujarvi? Do you think that situation can be resolved or is it beyond repair?

Take out a hit on him, shed the contract, realize on the insurance proceeds, and move on with life.

I'm not one for "sticking it" to the players, as it doesn't bode well for future players to come to Edmonton.

On the flip side, the kid has been given NUMEROUS opportunities to step into the top-6; he just is in capable of it; the Oilers have tried to put him in an environment where he can succeed and build confidence (i'm talking about his assignment to the AHL), and he performed... okay... His English is brutal making it impossible for him to develop and create chemistry with his teammates, coaches or GM. He's also (self admitted) not taken the transition to English seriously. Finally, there are few other teams in the NHL that are so painfully desperate for a top-6 forward as the Oilers are, and he wants to turn his back on that. If he showed up to camp, he would naturally slide into the top-6, regardless of whether he earns it or not. It would literally be handed to him because he shows up. But instead, he's acting like a child who and is demanding a trade.

In my opinion, he has a huge opportunity; but if he doesn't take it, he's really worthless. The Oilers, at worst, would lose a marginal bottom-6 player (in a trade, the might recoup a 3rd round pick... not really worth it). So, back to my original point, if he doesn't come crawling back with a better attitude, the insurance money and loss of contract would be more valuable to the Oilers than keeping him.

I'd do that deal for Toffoli but only if he came with an extension in the neighborhood of his current deal, say $5M x 3 years.

I like your thinking there...the way this is set up is that Edmonton would have about $32M in cap space going into next offseason and that’s before the cap even expands so they’ll be able to extend who they want/need and potentially be a player in free agency.
