The real question here is what do you think they’ll do with puljujarvi? Do you think that situation can be resolved or is it beyond repair?
Take out a hit on him, shed the contract, realize on the insurance proceeds, and move on with life.
I'm not one for "sticking it" to the players, as it doesn't bode well for future players to come to Edmonton.
On the flip side, the kid has been given NUMEROUS opportunities to step into the top-6; he just is in capable of it; the Oilers have tried to put him in an environment where he can succeed and build confidence (i'm talking about his assignment to the AHL), and he performed... okay... His English is brutal making it impossible for him to develop and create chemistry with his teammates, coaches or GM. He's also (self admitted) not taken the transition to English seriously. Finally, there are few other teams in the NHL that are so painfully desperate for a top-6 forward as the Oilers are, and he wants to turn his back on that. If he showed up to camp, he would naturally slide into the top-6, regardless of whether he earns it or not. It would literally be handed to him because he shows up. But instead, he's acting like a child who and is demanding a trade.
In my opinion, he has a huge opportunity; but if he doesn't take it, he's really worthless. The Oilers, at worst, would lose a marginal bottom-6 player (in a trade, the might recoup a 3rd round pick... not really worth it). So, back to my original point, if he doesn't come crawling back with a better attitude, the insurance money and loss of contract would be more valuable to the Oilers than keeping him.
