The Laine trade happens September 2019, prior to the 2019-20 season. The Oilers depleted defense means missing the playoffs, there are some excellent prospects that will replace Klefbom but they aren't ready for the 19-20 season. The Oilers win 3rd overall in the lottery after a 27th place finish and draft Quinton Byfield from Sudbury Wolves of the OHL. The acquisition of Laine also softens Puljujarvi's stance on the trade request, so he signs a 2-year $1.5M deal in time for training camp 2019.

WINNIPEG: this is based on EW's contract projections, link below. As you can see Klefbom's value is roughly equal to Laine's - but Klefbom's contract has 4 more years at 50% off left!

COLUMBUS: after July 1st 2020 Russell will be owed just $1.5M on the last year of his contract even though he carries a $4M cap hit, perfect for a small market team that isn't spending to the cap.

TAMPA BAY: with too many young defenders pushing, Benning gets traded. TBL has most of their RHD leaving through free agency next summer, Benning would be a stellar add for fairly cheap.

PITTSBURGH: with too many young defenders pushing, Bear gets traded.
