Keller gets 72M AAV Point gets

Created by: BOLTLOVER1
Team: 2019-20 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 4, 2019
Published: Sep. 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This was important domino. A less talented player than Point .. by virtually every metric ... AND was not RFA until 2020 gets 7.15M AAV .. I am starting to get concerned Point will be closer to 10M than 9M .. anything beginning with 8 just left the building. Domingue and 1 or 2 other moves maybe necessary in next couple weeks

Prices are getting crazy, but I'm still pretty sure that we'll give him a 3 years deal in order to keep the AAV down and being able to keep most of the 2020 RFAs in Tampa for the future.

I think we'll end up seeing a 7.5-7.75M 3 years deal here

For once I agree with you. I think if point does do a 3 year deal you are still looking at a high aav. If marner signs 3 x 9m do you think point is going to take less?

I mean it's an 8 year deal, I think it's fair for Keller. TB tends to get hometown discounts, I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being the same for Point

The concept of the hometown discount is laughable .. Vaz and Kuch weren't .. we OVERPAID Gourde and the shrimps.. only Stamkos and his contract can be viewed in that vein but even that a stretch .. the San Jose guy and few others this year are hometown

Term makes a difference. Players, especially at Point and Keller’s ages, tend to want short-term deals so they can improve even more and start to make more money when they end. Arizona overpayed to get that term. BriseBois isn’t going to do that; it’s literally not possible right now. Besides, while Point is probably better than Keller, the two have such different roles that they’re not directly comparable.

Why should Point get to make arbitrary comparisons to overpayed players who are worse than him and assume he deserves a couple million more, when his closest team comparable in terms of role and raw talent is making $8.5m with term and the Hart winner is making $9.5m with term?

Hedman, Stamkos, and Kucherov easily left several million on the table. Vasilevskiy took a slight discount compared to Bobrovsky or Price (though certainly a small one). Not that it’s the same thing, but Maroon and Shattenkirk also took discounts to sign here.

You literally have no clue .. you embarrassing yourself not to mention SO long winded.

POINT "probably better than Keller" and "they not comparable" .. laughable

KUCH left "several million on the table" .. by definition is 3M or more .. so should have signed for 12.5M as a forward last year?

Another hint in life .. better to keep shut and be perceived as stupid then open your mouth and remove all doubt

No doubt Kucherov easily gets 11 in a big market, so he took around 1.5 less on his deal here. He has left several million on the table though between the discount he took on his bridge and his current deal. Stamkos was going to make 10 in Toronto easy, took the 8.5 to stay here. Not to mention, none of these players got those paydays right after their elc's ended, and neither will Point just because of 1 big year. The primary reason is that the Lightning won't pay it, the 2nd reason is because Point values winning a cup and keeping the core group together more than bleeding the Lightning dry. 3 years at around 7.5, or 5 years around 8 or slightly above. If he's willing to sign for 8 years I could see 8.5 or maybe 8.75 if Tampa makes some small moves, but it doesn't sound like either side may be looking for an 8 year deal right now.
