Pure Speculation

Created by: OrangeMallard
Team: 2019-20 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 17, 2019
Published: Sep. 17, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is pure speculation based on the starting lines from the first exhibition game, so go easy on me.

Rationale:
During a recent interview, Eakins spoke about not trying to change too much too fast; about using what has worked well previously. This may offer us some insight into the lines for opening night.

Forwards:
4th Line: Jones - Shore - Sprong: This line makes a lot of sense based on their performance last year. It remains to be seen if they can challenge for a higher spot.
3rd Line: Ritchie - Henrique - Terry: Henrique has a good history playing with Ritchie. Playing alongside these wingers suggests that he may to destined for the 3rd line
2nd Line: Rakell - Steel - Silfverberg: This is pure speculation at this point b/c none of these players played tonight, but..., Ricky and Silf have a known chemistry. Putting Steel as their pivot provides a nice cradle to nurture him as he develops.
1st Line: Comtois - Getzlaf - Kase: Again this is pure speculation b/c none of these players played tonight. But I mean c'mon! Given the previous 3 lines who else is left? Put El Capitan between these two young goal-scorers and see what happens!

Defense:
1st Pairing: Lindholm - Manson: A shocker to no one. This tandem is one of the best shutdown pairs in the league. If Eakins intends to go with what works then this is a no brainer.
3rd Pairing: Mahura - Hakanpaa: Larsson may be on his way out. Make room for Mahura. As for Hakanpaa, They signed him for a reason. I suspect he makes the team on opening night.
2nd Pairing: Guhle - Fowler: Based on who is left the choice seems clear. Guhle and Fowler showed solid chemistry during a short run last season. Lets see if lightning can strike twice.

In Goal:
Starter: Gibson
Backup: Miller
Nothing more to say here.

The Healthy Scratches:
I haven't made up my mind on these players, and I suspect the coaching staff hasn't either. Whoever remains until opening night is a toss up

This is very well thought out, the Ducks could be a decent team this year, even if they don’t make the playoffs

Love the top 6 hate sprong on the 4th line but if he has to play there I'd really like that lineup

Honestly, I agree.

Sprong seems disserviced on the 4th line. But I don't think he earns a spot over Kase, Silf, or Terry on RW. Maybe if Silf shifts to LW, Sprong can crack the Ducks top 9

As a rebuilding/retooling team, I'm not tooo concerned about them making the playoffs this year. That said, I'm still hopeful that they could be a bubble team. Missing out on that potential lottery pick would be worth it to give our kiddos a taste of playoff hockey

We’ll see about the Mahura Hakanpää pair. Wouldn’t be surprised if they’re in SD to start the season and the 3rd pair is Larsson-MDZ/Holzer.

Fair, fair. I'd call it a toss up. But I'd be lying if I wasn't personally hoping for Mahura/Hakanpaa

I see MDZ/Holzer as 7th defenseman calibur. And Larsson is rapidly running out of runway.

I think for everyone worried about Sprong being on the 4th line (me included), its important to remember Eakins runs 4 lines. Although shore to me is a more 2 way guy, that line can still produce. We dont have an elite first line and I dont expect it to be played as such. Getz tends to have high TOI from being on the PP, but aside from that I think we are looking at 16:00-18:00 TOI a night for top line. Second line probably matching that 16:00. So in reality, Sprong could still get 10:00-12:00 a night if it works out. I also see him getting a crack at PP and PK time.

Aside from that, Hakanpaa's preseason debut was pretty disappointing. I'm hoping its just the transition to North American ice. But if its not, he's like SD bound. I like Guhle and Fowler. Mahura would be better with Del Zotto or Holzer to start the season just for stability.
