When healthy the Leafs have to trade one of the following

Created by: BCAPP

Description
One could argue they can get away with 21 players, but they can't get away with 20. At least not smartly. Nagging injuries to short for IR/LTIR, acute illnesses, and family and personal emergencies happen. Of you force players to play through these things or force others to play more you'll just increase exhaustion based injuries.

If Sandin and Mikheyev make the team I don't think they even have the cap for 21 players as both make a couple hundred thousand over their cheapest alternatives.

The only guys making over 1.5 million are the following:

Core
Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Andersen

Players one year from UFA who are clearly worth more to us than on the trade market:
Muzzin and Barrie

The rest and technically in this convo
Kapanen, Johnsson, Kerfoot, Ceci, Hyman

I think you take kerfoot out as the centre depth is key to building a winner.

So Johnsson, Kapanen, Ceci, Hyman

Johnsson is our best LW so I suspect he's safe
If Kapanen can prove he can be a LW I think you trade Hyman, if he can't you can look at Kapanen though I'm leery to trade him. But in a cap world sacrifices have to be made.

Ceci: we don't really have a ready replacement for him. If he truly does suck, it's probably worth paying a team to take him in a couple months for the cap flexibility but if he's a competent 20 minute per night NHL Rd our lack of organizational depth means it's probably best to keep him.

So I think it's Kapanen or Hyman depending on how well Kapanen can play LW

Why does everyone want to trade Hyman? Here’s a bold prediction: Hyman will not be traded.

I think I wrote a pretty clear explanation up there about why I think one of Kapanen or Hyman will be traded.

Perchance did you read it before asking why?

I also think losing one of our wingers is almost unavoidable at this point. I think there are some esoteric calculations regarding the % of the AAV counting to the cap when LTIR players come back (not sure), but even then, it's still looking grim for next year as well. If it comes down to that, I hope Hyman can fetch at least a low-cost/ELC RHD.

Have you run the numbers? If so, how can you both stay within the cap and also factor in Hyman's full AAV, without limiting Leafs to 21-man roster? ?

With Sandin over a 700k player (say Marincin) I think it's 20 players not 21 unfortunately

With sandin it is still 21. With Lilly it’s 20. Personally I think it’s too tight. But I’m not a wizzard like Pridham.

Just to clear things up about ltir. There is absolutely no accrued cap space. This applies to in season signing ms and TDL. Leafs will always be charged the full cap hit for every player on the roster. That number can not exceed the ACSL + relief pool.

Only explanation for that is you are a Finn.....

My take is Hyman and heres the reasoning :

Quoting: Laudan
if you dig deeper, youll notice its the most obvious choice. Johnsson, Kerfoot and Kapanen were just signed. Kerfoot and Kapanen are reportedlly killing in camp with speed ( and thats not against Hainsey ), which is rare skill. On the other side, Hyman is 28, had ACL ( i had one, not an easy comeback with those ), hes entering last years contract after this shortened Season, and grit is easier to find then speed. With another 40 Poinst Season TML wont be able to give him 4x 4M ( guess why ) and with that in mind he was ment to hit the road anyway, it will just happen two years earlier. Im the guy with much of the Hymans mentality also, you go there and battle it till death, so i would really like to see him stay, but the truth is different. Dubarelli just kicked him and Brown out while caveing.

But then again, you have plethora of youngsters that can do his job like Moore, Engvall, Marchment, Korshkov, Mikheyev ( hopefully for 2 x 775k ) even Wilson, while for the speed the only name that comes up is Bracco ( and im still dreaming about Duszak and Hollowell to be transfered to the wing with size as their handicap for D )

No he is just the better player for his age while also having a better contract where he stays an RFA at the end unlike Johnsson. Makes way more sense to keep the younger guy with higher potential upside especially if you hold his rights for longer than Johnsson.
