Moves to Make Over the Season

Created by: GMRyan
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 29, 2019
Published: Sep. 30, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1: Ceci trade is about shedding $ while respecting that not many teams are interested in him. Along with a low pick and retention on his contract; I traded him for a LTIR contract that allows the Leafs to hide the $. The bonus for the Ducks is that they add a RHD which is what they have been looking for according to the rumour mill. Ducks ownership may also be interested in trading a “dead” player for an active one. It’s been done before (Callahan trade to Ottawa) so it could happen, plus the Ducks rookies may hit bonuses and LTIR cap doesn’t allow teams to accumulate cap over the season. Which can carry bonus $ earned to the following seasons cap. That’s why the Ducks say “yes” here.

2: Hyman trade is about getting an incredible contract for a decent top 4 RHD in Mayfield. Hyman is the most expendable contract the Leafs have, and he does carry value. Lou will make a mistake after the Isles are crap this year.

3. Depth signings to secure future- all these prospects are Dubas signings and picks and he will make commitments to his system this year

5. Alright I think the Leafs should flip Lil to get Krill, I’m thinking that Krill is not gunna want to play for Minnesota and I’m thinking the Leafs could convince him like they have with lots of Russians. Krill needs a two year Rookie max contract which is perfect for the cap strapped Leafs and the Wild get something back for a lost asset. Krill is available next season

After these moves the Leafs have more cap and a better cap structure than before. Marner’s contract will force Dubas to make a move, see is what I want to see happen

I like the trade with the islanders. The ducks trade is meh and the trade with the wild is absolutely stupid both ways.

That islanders trade is awful wtf are you talking about?!? He is maybe worth a 3rd! You seem to think he is Towes or Pulock!

Totally agree, the Islanders aren't moving Mayfield and certainly not for that.

Top 4 defender on a contract for under $1.5M....that's worth a lot to any team. Mayfield isn't amazing per se but he's easily worth $1.5M especially compared to Ceci at $4M.

He isn't a top 4 defender tho. He is a 3rd pairing guy. Maybe a 4-5 at best. Towes and Pulock are top 4 defenders on low aav contracts.

He's a top 4 on the Leafs. On a deep defensive team, no he's a #5 guy but on 1/2 the teams in the NHL he's a #4.

So skill wise he is a bottom pair dman by your own admission, but we should pay as if he weren't to acquire him? That is ridiculous.

Two teams work out something fortuitous based on each team's needs and cap situations. On the Leafs he's a top 4 on a very good contract to a team with very mediocre defense and is in cap hell, that is irrelevant what he's worth to another team because to the Leafs he's worth a more then the average team. The islanders aren't just going to give him up, he's playing the 2nd line if I'm not mistaken on a deep defensive team so he's worth a 2nd line D man price on a great contract which inflates his value even more. What he's worth to a team like Colorado for example is large in part irrelevant.

That's ...
No.

That would be awful asset management. You are condoning an overpayment based on need. In other words it is fine to overpay based on desperation.

Do you still support hall for Larsson?

Another guy trying to trade Hyman. The leafs like his contract. The coach loves him like a son. He’s a key ingredient to one of the best lines in the league. Kills penalties. He will not be traded.

No it wouldn't, it's called making your team better with the parity of a salary cap. Would the Blackhawks paid what the Leafs did for JT? Not a chance. Teams manage their cap based on need and acquire players for packages that may seem like a headscratcher to that team but makes sense for another team. This is why you see trades where fans are pissed off on one side or outside fans of other teams claiming one team overpaid. A players value isn't always consistent across the league, as one example otherwise you'd see offer sheets flying around the league on a regular basis.

So the answer is yes, you do support Hall for Larsson.
