I actually think Melnyk MIGHT do this well at least consider it

Description
Alright folks. This trade happens the day after Seabs gets his $4M in bonuses paid next year. Ultimately leaving $27.5M in cap over the next 4 years BUT paying the low low cost of $16M over the next 4 years.

But wait, there's even more savings! Bobby Ryan costs $13M over the next 2 years...It's really $15M, but Bobby Ryan also gets $2M in bonuses that'll happen the same time as Seabrook...so that needs to be net out of it.

So really...with this trade
Year 1 Melnyk SAVES $4.5M in Cash
Year 2 Melnyk SAVES $1.5M in Cash
(read part b below)
Year 3 Melnyk Spends $5M in Cash
Year 4 Melnyk Spend $4.5M in Cash

Two other KEY (VERY IMPORTANT) factors...Time value of money AND options down the road

A.) Saving all that $$$ in Year 1 and 2 means a lot. At the very least it's the % increase year of year that he makes on the money saved. Best case it get invested elsewhere and makes more.

B.) He's likely even be able to use some of that draft capital. Picks or prospects that OTT doesn't mind losing down the road to work his hedge. Trade Seabs again before the last signing bonuses kicks in, but retain cap. What that means is retain HALF Seabs cap hit in the summer of 2022...Send some picks with it...Melnyk wouldn't pay $5M...he'd pay $500k in year 3 and $1.25M in year 5.

This makes it an entirely cash positive trade since the team that owns Seabrook's contract ON the day of the signing bonus pays that bonus.

IN CONCLUSION.
By doing this trade...it's POSSIBLE Melnyk can keep the $6.875 cap hit for the rest of Seab's contract...while SAVING $4.25M from what he needs to pay Bobby Ryan for the last 2 years of his contract.

PS...don't worry about the lines. That's not the point of the post.

Seabrook NMC nix's it, plus it would be a PR disaster to make another Money move in the middle of a rebuild.

Seabrooks a guy who might accept a trade but only to a contender .

maybe WPG, FLA or ARZ would be interested and close enough to playoff teams for Seabrook to ok.

ARZ gets a RD for the 2nd PP unit while also adding a player good for 150+ BS and 100+ hits .
he's got issues but he's instantly ARZ best RD by proxy

WPG D Core has been obliterated and they simply need to do something

FLA makes the most sense reuniting him with Quennville and a 2nd RD role behind Ekblad tightening up their core .

What Seabs never plays a game for OTT. It's still $4M+ savings for OTT.

Seabrook has 4 years where Ryan has 2 years left. Seabrook is on record he does not want to leave Chicago and he holds the cards.

But that still doesn't answer the question. What if he's a healthy scratch? If you're never playing again why do you care where your contract is?

for what like 2-3 years?but the additional 2 years gets doubled during buyout

according to this site its 24m over 8 years for Seabrook vs 10m over 4 years for Ryan

Thats 14m cash Melnyk has to pay out
even if the plan is to not buyout Seabrook it is still 23.5 for Seabrook over 5 years vs 22.5 for Ryan over 3 years .

in EVERY Scenario Melnyk pays more

I wish I could dislike something right now. The fact that you're talking 5 years and 3 years means you didn't read either of the 1st sentence in the description, or just the year this post takes place in. That's not even mentioning any of the points being made.

no , it means you dont understand the difference between Cap and Salary .

now had you said it saved him 4m Cap , sure you'd be right over that 2 year gap they would average that for sure
but you did not going as far as to specifically state its Salary /Cash the owners would save .

you're asking for Credit for something you didnt say
you declared numbers that represent Cap as Salary getting offended when the Error is scrutinized .
otherwise you're numbers are way off assuming you didnt get confused between Cap and Salary .

my man... do you see the trade? You know that Bobby Ryan is due $7.5M EACH year? Yeah He would be SAVING money for relatively the same cap hit. YES SAVING! Because he would spend $1M in salary for Seabrook, but $5.5M in salary for Bobby ryan...so YES saving $4.5M
