I never understood this. If I am making a trade it is to help my team. I don't care what it does for the other team, and I don't care who the other team is.

Maybe you don't but NHL GM's definitely do, you can see it in a lot of moves GM's make and it limits the returns from some guys, McPhee traded Haula and
C. Miller for peanuts but part of that's cause he prefers to not deal within his own conference, when you limit who you're willing to deal with it limits the return.

And this trade as proposed here, if you were Chayka would you seriously trade one of your goalies to your direct competition that could potentially keep you from getting into the playoffs? No you wouldn't, if that trade worked out for the Sharks and the Coyotes miss the playoffs you'd be out of a job and that trade would be a big reason why, very few GM's are gonna take that risk and certainly not for a couple picks, a struggling backup and a very average bottom 6 winger, not one in Chaykas situation anyway.

If Arizona trades Raanta, I think it's much more likely to be to Columbus or Detroit or Ottawa for draft picks, and I don't think Stevie Y is big on trading draft picks.

You make a trade because it makes you better.

GMs are terrified of helping teams in their division. Not saying its the right thing, but its how it is. Sharks would have to really overpay if they want Raanta

Sure but how does Dell, M. Karlsson and two picks make the Coyotes better then having Raanta?

I doubt the yotes would help out a team they are going to be competing for a playoff spot with. Even if they do accept it doesn’t make sense for the sharks to lock in $10 million in 2 mediocre goalies. Georgiev from the rangers would make more sense IMO. He’s young, good, and you’d be able to sign him to a cheap bridge deal in the summer. I’d rather do that than trade for a mediocre goalie that can’t stay healthy.
