Not the same, Barzal is young, I don’t see Domi taking any discount, Gally it’s completly different situation. He loves MTL, and they knows at their age they can fall off very fast and put the team in trouble with their contract

Gallagher is arguably Montreals top forward, and he's part of their shutdown/most relied on line, and hes still signed for next year. a nothing prospect in bellows and a heavily struggling leddy is not enough, considering the isles pick is late in round 1

Leon Draisaitl makes 8.5 million in Edmonton and will net 4.448 million. Ryan Johansson makes 8 mill on the predators, his net salary is 4.875

Edmonton isnt not as bad as quebec for tax but the difference isn’t that important. Gallagher want to play for the habs and will take a bargain for sure. Plus he still have 2 season on is current deal. If he get hurts next year or is production drop a bit is value could go down.

Gallagher is one of the best 5 v 5 goal scorers in the league , and he’s on pace for 33 goals this season. I’m sure he will take a discount, but 6.5 x 6 is straight up robbery. No player in the last decade has taken a discount on term and AAV. If you want a discount on AAV , he’s getting max term. If you want a discount on term, you’re giving him more AAV.

I would compare Gallagher situation to Anders lee. Lee is the captain , loves Long Island, and wanted to sign with the islanders but he wasn’t taking a discount on term and AAV. He put up 28 goals 52 pts in 18-19. He took a slight discount on AAV (he could’ve gotten 7.5 in free agency) but isles had to give him 7 years.

Never said he’s testing the market - but there’s no one recently who’s given their team a huge discount and I doubt Gallagher will be the first. Like i said, 7 x 7 would be a discount. History is not on MTL side. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, if hes that important to MTL on and off the ice then I guess it’s worth it. Take NSH + josi for example. He loves Nashville and wanted to stay there but they still had to pony up and give him 9 mill for the next 8 years after having him on a bargain contract for 5+ years

Meier and Labanc in San Jose, Karlsson, Fleury and Pacioretty in Vegas, and Ellis in Nashville all took less than they could have fairly recently.

There is also a lot of good will between the 2 sides. Bergevin signed him to a 6 year deal right out of his ELC despite the fact that he hadn't shown any indication of being more than a 3rd line energy guy. Many people thought it was a bit expensive for his type of player at the time in fact.

His next deal will undoubtedly be longer than ideal. I do believe that he will give a discount however.

In the end he's a player the team just can't afford to lose, even if the last years of his deal are more than we'd like.

Meier and Labanc were RFA. Karlsson took a discount only on AAV not term. Plus Vegas has no state income tax. Pacioretty took a discount on term, definitely not AAV. He had 17 goals the year prior. Fleury deal was not a discount, I’d say that’s market value , maybe even a slight overpay. 7 million for 3 years for a 35 year old goaltender. Ellis took a discount on AAV, not term.

I think Gallagher would take an 8 year deal at 6.5 AAV. But he’s not doing that at 6 years. If Montreal wants the AAV lower, they will need to give him max term. If they want him at 5 years, they will need to give him around 8 mill.

I might have missed some of your previous comments, I was referring your statement that "there's no one recently who's given their team a huge discount and I doubt Gallagher will be the first". I believe that Karlsson at least can be considered to have given a rather large discount compared to market value.

I disagree about Pacioretty. He had one bad year when the whole team crashed but had scored at a 30+ goal pace for about 7 years before that. I'm not sure how that isn't worth more than $7 million on anything other than an 8 year deal (he wanted 8x8 to stay in MTL)

Fleury may be getting older but imo he's still worth at least $1million more than the likes of Holtby, Helebuyck and Jones over the term of his contract.

I do believe we agree on this point. I was simply stating that imo he will take a discount on either term or AAV and go below market value.

My last point was that he is a player the team cannot afford to lose even if we need to give an 8 year deal to a 30 year old.

Do you think Montreal is going to give him 8 years when he turns 30?

Honestly, if giving Gally 8 years means he takes a lower cap hit, I'd do it. 8 years at $6mill AAV, jump on it. Even if Gallagher's playstyle probably means the last few years of the deal are big overpays.

Other than that probably looking at a Pacioretty type deal that he signed in Vegas imo, as in a 5 years deal, probably around $7-7.5mil range.
