if we're trading Murray (which we still probably shouldn't, unless a team drastically overpays) I'd much rather add a bit to get a really good top 6 winger or top 4 d man, than get a package of other stuff

Only top 6 forward ottawa would part ways with would be JGP, and even then he's only top 6 because he's on Ottawa

If the Pens had faith in Jarry and DeSmith as a tandem this would be a pretty good trade for them.

You can take Jack Johnson out but the Pens will take Ottawa's fist, not SJ's.
You can also keep Namestnikov.
Tierney is an okay 3C, nothing more.

Like AFox said, you're not getting a starting goalie for a package of stuff. Something heading to Pittsburgh needs to be worth moving out Murray. That would be Ottawa's 2020 1st.

Ottawa only has a few pieces of interest. Obviously Chabot is out. That leaves the 1st and Tkachuk. I went with the 1st.

Going from SJ's 1st to Ottawa's 1st would be a extremely better prospect. I do remember that you think that a 1st is a 1st is a 1st... but it isn't.

Two weeks ago they were tied in the standings. Give Ottawa a real goalie while the Sharks still hope Jones puts it together? Pretty close. Could be even, if they keep buying rather than selling.

SJ is 2 points out of a playoff spot. They are doing a little worse than I realized, but I think that they will still end up being a #20 pick or so.
Ottawa will be a top-5 pick.

SJ replaced two $6M wings last summer with the Orpik of forwards. Can they make another deadline splash and make the playoffs. Of course. Will they want to deplete their prospect pool even further, to do so? Probably. Yeah, I think they make the playoffs if they stay healthy.

Ottawa picked off 3/4 of the Leafs' 1st PK unit over the summer, including half of their top four defense. Anderson started out the season looking better than Andersen. They've got some young offensive players coming along. Upgrade to Murray and add another #4-5d, and they could sneak in, too. If it isn't JJ, they can still find one.

I like this idea for the Sens. I think Namestnikov could play well with Malkin and Tierney at 3C is an upgrade for the Pens, but I don't know enough about Jarry/DeSmith's experience/endurance to know if the Pens should risk it. Either mid-first pick equalizes value, but the Pens should be all-in based on Crosby/Malkin not getting a bunch younger.
