Leafs

Created by: JoelWard
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 14, 2019
Published: Dec. 14, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Oilers trade: Oilers gain affordable offensive depth while dealing from a position of strength. Move of Mikheyev and Johnsson sets the Leafs up nicely for the expansion draft, as they can protect Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Kapanen/Hyman/Kerfoot/Rielly/Pietrangelo/Demott/Andersen with Sandin/Liljegren/Robertson/Korshkov/Bracco exempt and Larsson a UFA to re-sign. Larsson has been of interest to Dubas in the past and would be a solid partner for Rielly.

Ducks trade: Anaheim gets financial relief, Leafs work the cap again in order to be afforded emergency call ups while up against the cap

Pietrangelo comes home for $70 mil (Josi + taxes)

Larsson does not have this kind of value.
Surprised how much you put the cap at and still not cap compliant.

Yeah, this one is out there. I don't think Larsson makes the Leafs a ton better, he's not awesome. That's a lot to give up for him.

That's probably not a contract you want to give Pietrangelo. That makes it almost impossible to resign Reilly, Hyman and Anderson in the next two years. I also don't think Brian Elliott is taking that contract and Justin Holl has definitely deserved more of a raise than that.

The Kesler trade is absolutely bat**** insane. Why on earth do you do that? Some people seem to think using LTIR is an advantage, when in fact it's a pain in the ass and makes it harder to manage the cap. The ability to use emergency loans, callups and declare roster emergencies is not reliant on using LTIR.

This would be an awful reality to start next season with. Not even going to mention Nick Robertson being in the top 6. I think he's great, but that's unequivocally not going to happen.

I agree with all your points, but I think the Petro signing would be good. Leafs need to go all in and a signing like this would be doing that. Yes it is a lot for a player his age, but the next 3 years would be a massive competitive window. The Leafs are in a 5 year window right now with their current core. We need to invest in those 5 years.
