Replacing Kadri

Description
Hey there, friendly hockey fans of the frozen north!

A recent Leafs post asked for offers on Bill Nylander, everybody's favorite Science Guylander.

I pointed out that he's got old friends on Washington who used to play with his dad, but that the only logical cap-fit would involve Oshie. Leafs fans pointed out that Oshie is old, and they want a backup goalie and a defenseman.

I pointed out that Oshie is on pace for 33 goals this year, and I was about to add that the Caps' power play is 4th overall since the team acquired him, but I realized they weren't listening anymore....

So, Oshie's too old to be a one for one for Nylander, but Leafs fans are annoyed that Nylander is slumping (three goals in his last fifteen games) and want to give Mikheyev, Kapanen, or Bracco a shot with Matthews.

Help me balance this deal, please, in the poll, or comment how else to fix it. Thanks!

Honestly think you lose that deal regardless of who the 3rd piece of the trade is

I think I do, too, but I'm posting this as a Caps fan. Add a 2nd round pick for the age difference, and Oshie's still a tough, slippery, perennial 30 goal threat who's good on both special teams, and Nylander is still a young guy who excels at carrying the puck up the ice and then getting bumped off it. Can he improve? Yes. Is any team lining up to trade for him while he has three goals in his last fifteen games? Not that I can see. I mean, I'm sure the Isles would give Nick Leddy....

As a Leafs fan, his point totals are slumping right now but he is doing everything else and I dont see Leafs trading him ever. However as far as trade value goes, you better start with Connor McMichael and add Radko Gudas probably. If you dont want to part ways with that (Nylander is that good), then do Wilson + mid-draft pick in terms of trade value or Vrana+Gudas.

People dont realize how good of an allaround player Nylander is. And his price would need to be massive overpayment to even move the needle. Leafs organization loves him from Tanenbaum down to AHL coaches..

For your poll, I put Gudas because it seems as if the Leafs need some help on the right hand, but only Gudas if he has like a 1 mil salary, because the leafs prob can't afford otherwise

Can we stop trading Nylander please? Especially for guys who are almost a decade older with a high cap hit and term? That would be just wonderful.

Thanks! I think he could be a 2nd pair puck mover in the NHL. He got 7 points in a 15 game stretch at the end of last year, once his leg healed from a summer break. It's a small sample size, but it's how long Nylander's been slumping for Leafs fans to start talking trade.

I think Djoos probably gets traded for just a 3rd round pick, anytime between now and the draft, because so few teams have cap space for him, and the Caps have great LHD prospects who need ice time behind him, but I'd rather see him get traded for a prospect or two at any other position(s).

Over the last year and half I would have loved to see Nylander traded more than few times, but right now I'm a huge fan. IMO he was the best player on the ice the other night against Buffalo. His puck control/protection/patience is awesome. He was competing for pucks, winning battles, and making plays. Matthews is a shooter, he needs a play maker like Nylander to make him better and they do work well together. He is the exact type of player Dubas/Keefe need for their system. Mikheyev/Kapanen don't even come close to having the abilities that Nylander has and for someone to suggest Bracco is a better option is, well, hilarious.

Yeah, I didn't start the conversation. I'm responding to the recent Leafs thread titled, "Nylander auction." I get that the team is pretty happy with him, and that he's a little bit younger even than Vrana or Wilson, so it doesn't matter that they outscored him last year and that they're all pretty close in stats this year (Vrana's ahead in GAP, with Nylander in second and Wilson a close 3rd in all three). Honestly, I like Nylander, too. I think he's a really skilled hockey player who has the same ups and downs as anybody, and I think he'd be awesome on a line with Vrana and Backstrom. They each speak a little bit of Swedish, so they'd be able to just shout out their plans and opponents would still be surprised.

But being able to trade Oshie hinges on WIlson taking his net-front spot on the top power play, because the Caps don't have anyone else who is as tough as Oshie and anywhere close to Oshie's skill level.

Is McMichael still leading some junior league in points, in is D+1 year? Or is he slipping a little bit? He's the first center the Caps have picked in a first round since Kuznetsov, who is 28. So that's not super-exciting.

I was more thinking that if the Leafs wanted to get tougher and improve specific things about their team, and are impressed by how well Mikheyev and Kapanen are playing.... Yeah. I wouldn't trade him. He's terrific.

Thanks. I don't even know if that's legal. He's already retained down from 3.5 to 2.5. If it's legal, the Caps could probably retain half of his remaining cap hit and call up Djoos with the other 1.25M of space at the deadline? The extra 1.25M from Oshie to Nylander appears to put them over the cap, but I think they have some "deadline cap space" that might absorb that. Is that how it works?

Early lead in the poll goes to Gudas, but Leafs fan comments say that still isn't enough. So what about:

Oshie--on pace for 33 goals on a team whose first pass is to Ovechkin. Could get more with a different team.
Copley--about the 40th best goalie in the league last year, all things considered?
Gudas--tough as nails and great at defense, but also chips in about 20 points a year, lately.
Johansen--recent 1st pick LHD coming along okay, except he's injured right now.
2nd round pick in 2020--deep draft, should be able to score someone good.
....and because someone asked for retention on Gudas....
One Million Dollars.

What would it take to convince Tor to trade Mikheyev?

Right now probably a lot. I think they're excited about his potential more than anything. This version of Leafs management believes in patience, development, and building their team within. Moving him so early goes against that. He's good, not great, but very raw and has the potential to become a really good top 6 forward. He's not untouchable, but I'd say a young top 4 D with term/team control on a good contract. If I had that player on my team I wouldn't trade him for Mikheyev.
