Proposed trade in the Athletic article

Created by: Blazingbat11
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 31, 2019
Published: Dec. 31, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Proposed by Arpon Basu and Marc-Antoine Godin from the Athletic on their combined article "Can the Canadiens be contenders? How signings, trades and a cap crunch could change the team in the next 18 months".

The trade would be done in the offseason.

To EDM: Max Domi + Victor Mete

To MTL: Darnell Nurse + prospect

They first mention that the Habs should just offer sheet him, then add the Domi + Mete swap.

Who would the prospect be? Poolparty? Yamamoto? Samorukov? I doubt someone like Broberg or Bouchard would be involved. You decide!

Arpon basu is the biggest bullshater in quebec. Dominis olaying great hockey since last year. He had a little slump this year in November just like almost everyone on the team but trading him for nurse doesn’t make sense unless the prospect coming back is broberg or bouchard and i really doubt the oilers will sacrifice them

I wouldn't do it. I think Domi and Mete should be part of the youth movement we should be doing for the next 2 to 3 years. Players we should trade at the deadline this year are Tatar and Petry with retention for increased value and amount of suitors.
Tatat retained at 2.8mil and Juulsen for Puljujärvi, Samorukov and Edmonton 1st (top 10 protected) is where I would start.

Not discounting what Domi has done here.....but........Nurse is still on pace for another 40ish pts season. He can skate, is 6'4'' 220lbs 2-way top paring Dman........if MTL want to acquire him, Domi is one of the only options imo for EDM to consider it.

Personally for me it would depend on the prospect or maybe even a pick as well coming back. but it's a lot closer than people think in value imo.

Tatar salary is 5.3mil, but his cap hit is 4.8mil. Montreal could retain 2.165mil making it 50% of is 5.3mil salary.

Nurse doesn’t justify domi and mete. That why i said that the prospect would need to be broberg or bouchard. Mete have 120+ nhl experience games and have been good. Nurse is good but he is a top 2 defenseman in edmonton something he would be in a top contending team. He would be a second pairing defenseman on contending team.

That's debatable. Nurse on plenty of playoff teams would be on their top pairing. For the Habs, 1 million % he'd be their top LD since Markov....can you think of another? and Markov was drafted...wait for it...... in 1998 by MTL.... that's how long Habs haven't had another legit young LD*

*fingers crossed Romanov breaks the spell...

I doubt Edmonton let Nurse go. He is their best dmen, young, big, has some offense and will be much needed in the playoffs.

We had markov for 17 years that why we didn’t have another one, didn’t need another one. We had over that spend roman hamrlik, alexei emelin, who where playing behind markov on left side. Markov was playing 27-28 min in is prime years. Nurse isnt near what markov was. Nurse as earn the top spot because edmonton have no true top pairing defenseman. Chariot is playing over 23 minutes with a + differential and is on pace for around 30 point. That doesnt means he is a first pairing defenseman.

The point is that domi and mete vs nurse depend on oilers willingness to trade either broberg or bouchard

That has to be one of the worst trades I've seen in awhile. You don't trade two guys who are that great in the lockerroom for a guy who can't play defense.
