I hope Lou realizes that he is in a lose lose situation

Created by: hockeymad
Team: 2016-17 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 20, 2016

Description
So it has been reported that Lou is refusing to add the bonus money associated with a 1st overall pick. I hope this is untrue cause if it is maybe Shanahan should start thinking of stepping in and making an executive decision. Matthews has more options than most 1st overall picks have and to be honest this should be the easiest signing Lou should have in his time with the leafs. Anyways though I am hopeful Lou will come to his senses this is how the team will look if Matthews goes and plays in Switzerland or Russia next season

Pretty good, just that cowen is expected to be bought out so that would free up some cap space. And most probably lupul will be in robidas-land so hes probably gonna be on the LTIR

I LTIR'D him due to that if he
" unexpectedly" failed his medical than they will probably have to LTIR him instead. Lupul might be but it won't free up cap and it will give them another veteran voice in practise.

Don't know if this was Matthews plan all along but the reason he went to Switzerland was to be a deemed a "European" in terms of the draft. In three years he can sign as a free agent with any team in the NHL. Those who think Lou is playing hardball, think again, Matthews has the power.

I doubt he planned to spend 3 years in Europe I just don't think he planned that if he went 1st overall he wouldn't be given a 1st overall pick contract. If he is not signed it is all Lou and for what money if Matthews lives up to his draft status will be more than value???

I think y'all will be okay without Matthews. Good luck with that. Actually, Lou has been around the block a few (hundred) times. They will reach a deal. Matthews holds the cards to a certain extent, but Playing in Europe or Russia is nothing like the NHL. Matthews isn't going to pull a Lindros type move. You do have to worry about him getting an attitude down the road, just like Ryan Johanssen did with the Jackets. Any way you slice it, uou will get a very large return for him if he must be traded in a couple years.

A large return in a couple of years? Matthews can be a free agent in three years. Ryan Johanssen is not a good comparison. Once a player signs his NHL contract, he is under their control for at least 6 years. Matthews by not signing with the Leafs, cuts that time down to three years.

RyJo was smart. There is still some bizarre thought out there that you need to sign these bridge contracts. If you are good, you are good. I'd rather pay a 20-25yr old than a 30 year old. Some teams have started to pay up for their young players and I respect them for it.

AM isn't going to skip out on the NHL. If Lou refuses to sign him and the team starts to worry I can honestly see him getting canned or someone stepping in. He is only a short term GM option IMO anyways.

leafs1967. You're right about bridge contracts....Good young players coming off their ELCs and getting almost UFA contracts. See...Scheifele, MacKinnon, Two years, lets see what McDavid gets.
