cost to take bakes w/o retention is a 1st round pick and that's without giving anything up (see marleau trade last year). w/ retained you are still likely giving up a 2nd but i'll give you the 3rd rounder.
Cost for kreider is a 1st and a young roster forward. Don't wanna give it up? someone will.. btw the deal helps Boston retain Krug and others next season by eliminating an extra 2m in cap (with the proposed retained salary)..
so heinen+1st+3rd is pretty much the minimum to eliminate Backes' salary next year too
Lol, Marleau has nothing to do with it. Don’t be that guy. Completely different circumstances. Why didn’t the Leafs get a 1st when they took David Clarkson? Completely different circumstances.
Marleau was 35+ contract. Backes is not. No cap relief on Marleau.
Leafs were backed into a corner and had to move Mareleau’s entire contract. B’s can sign everyone next year with Backes still on the team other than Halak who has played and priced his way out of Boston anyway.
Marleau cost more in actual $ to buyout than Backes.
Boston can retain on Backes to lower the cost of moving him. Leafs could not.
Leafs had to and were willing to pay a premium to move him. B’s don’t need to and aren’t willing to.
Marleau was a problem. Backes is an inconvenience
Better comparable. Steve Mason. Was moved with 25pt wing, 4th, 7th for fringe player. So Backes, Kuraly, 3rd for Ebert. Then we’ll trade you Heinen and 2nd for Kreider, no retention. Or you can swap Kuraly and the 3rd for the 2nd and we are right back to the deal i said above. If not, no big deal. Kreider is not the player they need. They have a glut of left shot wings. They need a true RW.
