Using the Zucker trade to guess the next move

Created by: JayTea
Team: 2019-20 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 12, 2020
Published: Feb. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Per LeBrun and Russo, the Canes have been kicking the tires on Matt Dumba and are willing to part with a 1st round pick since they have 2. Russo has said 2 of the key pieces to a Dumba trade from Guerin's perspective is a 1st round pick and a center coming back. The Canes have both to offer, as well as an expiring contract roster player to keep the Wild in it this year.

I know no one reads this far in the description, but there probably would be other pieces involved but the base of the trade would be the trade suggested below.
Trades
MIN
  1. Suzuki, Ryan
  2. van Riemsdyk, Trevor
  3. 2020 1st round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
The pick would be whichever is the earlier of the two picks, top 10 protected. If the earlier pick ends up a top 10, Canes can either send over their 2021 unprotected or their later 2020 pick.

This matches exactly what the issue is with the Canes this year...we have too many Dumba’s (offense pushers) and Suter’s (Not good enough skaters) and not enough Brodin’s (defensively responsible good skaters).

Quoting: JayTea
Sometimes Dumba pushes too much to help create offense and ends up out of position, which forces his partner to cover for him. Imo Suter isn't a good enough skater to cover for that at this stage in his career, so defensively Dumba has worked pretty well with Brodin since he's a strong skater.

So Brodin might be of more interest then. My guess is he'd cost about the same due to his lower cap hit and less concern about his current play, meaning there would probably be more teams showing interest. If the Wild moved Brodin, they could probably run Suter/Spurgeon, Soucy/Dumba, Hunt/Pateryn and callup a player from Iowa as a 7th D so TVR wouldn't need to come back (unless the Canes need to send him to make their roster work, could be someone else on an expiring deal or they trade Haula in a separate move).

Bean is a bluechip, he's been the best D man in the AHL this year. Drury is a A- prospect

do u think theres a chance Jordan Staal gets moved maybe in the summer or will they hang on to him?

They'll hang onto him because Rod Brind'Amour, but they should try to move him, I don't know who would take him thouygh, 3 more years at 6 mil, plus he'd have to waive his NMC

After the Nino/Rask trade last year, i'd have a hard time believing that wild ownership(Leipold) would allow such a trade. It would have to be very loaded in Wild's favor in my opinion.

It kind of is if you think about it. A third 1st round pick in a deep draft (unless somehow Toronto and Carolina both collapse) and a center prospect projected to be a top 6 player? They don't have any other trading chips to bring in that kind of return other than Brodin or Dumba and they badly need a center or two for their long term success. Maybe Dumba takes the summer to get his head cleared and comes back next year looking more like the 17-18 and early 18-19 version of himself, but if a Carolina is interested now and offers something like this, I'd take it and focus on the future. The current core's window is over and they need to work on transitioning to the next core of Ek, Kunin, Greenway, Kaprizov, and bring in more prospects like Boldy and Addison to build towards the future.

I have to believe the Canes have deal in place to move Pesce this summer if they are truly interested in Dumba. That makes the most sense to me.
Scott Wheeler of the Athletic has Geekie rated as the Canes’ 16th best prospect. Not that he’s the end-all-be-all of prospect ratings, but I do respect his opinion. Geekie’s skating seems to be the consensus weakness and that makes him a non-starter for me.
I think it would have to be Suzuki and the 1st to make the Wild give up Dumba...whose play continues to get better and better now.
A future forward group of Kaprizov, Fiala, Suzuki, Ek, Boldy, Khovanov, Kunin, Greenway, etc looks pretty good to me!

If they pull a deal like this off, let’s hope Guerin can figure out a way to move Zuccarello’s contract in a year or two...

That would be pretty narrow minded...you might want to take a look at Nino’s numbers this year.

What the heck happened there anyhow? I don't get to watch the Canes play much.

Oversimplification- he’s in a massive career low shooting slump (7.7%) and has been pressing. His TOI is down 4 mins per game vs what he did in CAR after the trade last year.

Meanwhile Rask is a scratch on a nightly basis, cause he has blocks on his feet and will most likely get bought out if not traded. The wild clearly got fleeced big time, narrow-minded or not.

A better move for the Wild could have been if they absolutely needed to shed Nino's contract to put him on waivers and lose him for nothing. Sadly we got Rask.

That Rask contract was a Ron Francis special...handing term to an unproven player. Scott Darling and Victor Rask etc

At least the Minny didn’t honor the NTC that was coming.

The NTC is irrelevant really, cause you have to pay someone to take him. Most likely i see a buy out coming.
