The Leafs get a top 4 2-way defenseman with size & physicality, a good defensive Forward that helps them stop the cycle in their own end & a late first. They still need to do more than just this 1 trade to be a contending team but it definitely gets them in the right direction.

Here is the trade TOR would accept...
Compher, Makar, 1st for Marner (no retention)

I know...COL would never do it. But TOR would never do your original trade either.

I think Tatar would probably cost a similar package to this Marner one. He is much cheaper & I know the analytics say he is the far better player, but I still think Marner is a bit better.

Well Marner’s not good enough to fetch Makar 1 for 1.

I would argue that a 1 for 1 trade is entirely reasonable in regards to value, but neither team makes that trade because it's crazy.

And for "MitchMarnerElite" "Marner Stan Account" constantly making posts that say ~"watched the last game, Marner played pretty poorly, let's trade him for a bag of pucks", I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish...

I don’t agree with your analysis. Cole has been a top 4 defenseman since the 2016/17 season & he’s played very good defensively. Nichushkin has been ranked amongst the Selke candidates by evolving hockey. The 1st comes in a very strong draft.

I never said “trade him for a bag of pucks.” All of my deals the Leafs have gotten a pretty good package in return that suits their needs. If I am being objective, then it’s true that Marner has not played like himself this season.

You have undervalued him in every trade based strictly on the fact that he is having one (kind of) down season with 6 yrs remaining on an $11mm deal.

GM Dubas will otherwise hang up the phone, 'cause Leafs aren't in rebuild mode at all, so they have no reason to sell a star forward for several notably inferior players (even if they're very useful). I also believe the current deal wouldn't make sense for Toronto either (not because of value, but because of needs)

Would the Avs trade Rantanen easily? Obviously not, so Toronto is in the same place.

The Leafs are on the brink of missing the playoffs or a certain first round exit. They may not be in rebuild mode but they certainly need a retool. I think Rantanen has more value than Marner cuz he is the slightly better player & making about 1.5 million less. Marner alone isn’t enough to fetch Makar.

Can the Avalanche realistically afford to do this trade ( both in salary and draft picks) Would Toronto do it?
