NYI
  1. Parise, Zach ($1,138,461 retained)
MIN
  1. Bellows, Kieffer
  2. Ladd, Andrew
  3. 2021 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
NYI definitely would have had to add some significant value. Almost for certain a first or a C prospect. I'm guessing Bellows was involved.
I also think the Wild were trying to get to an agreement to send Parise BACK to MIN in the case of him retiring. Some type of recapture prevention.
2.
NYI
  1. 2021 5th round pick (NSH)
3.
NYI
  1. 2021 4th round pick (COL)
OTT
  1. Boychuk, Johnny ($500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
this contract needs to go. OTT could get some value out of boychuk. I dont think NYI needs to pay to offload him

If Praise retires there would be nothing MN could do to stop/limit the recapture, it wouldn't matter which team he was on. The best they could hope for is him to go LTIR(etired).

It's tough to put a value on this trade. Ladd is junk, but he does come off the books sooner than Parise. Also MN wouldn't have to protect him in the expansion draft, while they need to use a spot on Parise.

I'm also guess MN wanted a bigger add than NYI wanted to give up. It really was an odd trade to see rumored with the age, money, term, and possible recapture (MN) of the players. It seems like more of an offseason move rather than an inseason one.

Perhaps an agreement by both teams that if he does retire, he is shipped back to MIN?

Why bother? If he retires, he retires, it won't matter which team he's on the recapture hit will be the same for MN. I'm just not sure how retirement would work with retained money.

I don't even know if they could put that clause in writing, it could get messy. It seems like more of a handshake deal.

It's the recapture penalty. They have no choice but to bother. If he retires at 39, that counts for 18M against the Wild's cap.

Not quite, that was if he were traded today. How cap recapture works is you first have to figure out how much actual salary needs to be paid to the end of Parise's contract. Today, that is $18M of his $98M contract that we haven't actually paid him (since salary is not AAV). So that $18M is how much benefit the Wild gained from not having to pay out his full contract and it gets locked in if they trade him and that amount would be spread over however many years are left on Parise's contract at the time of his retirement. So if we traded him today and Parise retired with 2 years on his deal, that salary is put as an $18M penalty divided by 2 years remaining on his deal, for a total of $9M for 2 years. If he retired and had one year remaining, it would have been the full $18M. If we trade him next year (after the offseason), it won't be $18M because we will have had paid more of his total salary. I can't remember the exact amount we pay him next year, but I think it's like $4-5M. Say it's $5M and we trade him next year at the deadline, we would have gained a $13M benefit in cap by not paying out his total salary and thus that amount would lock in if we traded him. If he retired with one year left on his deal, we'd be on the hook for a $13M cap penalty instead of $18M because we paid that extra $5M. Now if we keep him and he retires in his final year (I think he only makes like $1M in salary his final year of his deal) we'd only be on the hook for $1M or however much we haven't actually paid him at the time of his retirement. It's really complicated so hopefully my explanation helps

Maybe I'm reading it the wrong way, but this recapture doesn't look good for the wild?

That's if we traded him today because we haven't paid $18M of his $98M contract. That's where they are getting the $18M number from

I meant the 19.4M recapture penalty in 2024, at the very bottom of the screen. I'd assume it is just shifted down? Even still, one year can't make that much of a difference?

Basically, you first figure out how much salary is remaining on Parise's deal. To figure out the yearly cap penalty if he's traded, you take that salary amount remaining at the time he's traded and divide it by how many years he has left on his contract at the time he retires. If he's not traded, it's the same concept but that number isn't locked in, it's just however much actual money is left to be paid on his deal divided by the years left on his contract.

It took me like 2 years of being explained how this works by Wild writers and I finally got it last summer. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is.

Recapture is just the difference of the total money paid to him so far compared to what the AAV for the same amount of time has been.

Using full seasons totals, because it's easier. 8 years totals:
paid $80m.
Cap hit $60.3m.

Money paid - cap hit = recapture penalty:
$80m - $60.3m = $19.7m

I think as others may have said already: the Wild are on the hook for massive recapture penalties no matter what happens to him or where he goes. They signed the contract, it’s their problem no matter what. The isles would be on the hook for very very minimal recapture penalties.
