Realistic Approach

Created by: Trevy
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 14, 2020
Published: Mar. 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Ethan Bear contract modelled after Rasmus Anderson’s 6 year extension minus 1 year and added AAV.

- Derek Stepan is the ideal third line centre for the Oilers in my personal opinion. Gives them diversity with a right-handed shot down the middle who can win face offs and contribute offensively. Pending UFA who has struggled offensively this season with Arizona.

- Andreas Athanasiou signs a bridge deal at a market value AAV.

- The emergence of Evan Bouchard allows the team to move Matt Benning who would be due a raise from a 1.9M AAV these past 2 seasons. The team recoups draft stock and Bouchard plays sheltered minutes and PP in his rookie season. Mike Green signs a 1x1 deal as veteran depth should an injury occur or Bouchard struggles early on.

- Tyler Ennis takes a slightly below market value deal to stay in his hometown on a winning hockey team. A guy who can move up the lineup if injuries occur to the top 6.

- Team sticks with same goaltending tandem as this season.

- Anton Slepyshev is not brought back this season. I personally would rather have Tyler Benson in the lineup next year opposed to Slepyshev.

- Sam Gagner comes back on a cheap deal for 2 years and is the first call up.

Fair trades and signing, but Bear wont get 5M, Hanifin got 4.95M and he's way better than Bear

there is absolutely no way that Bear should be given that much.

I think most Flames fans would agree that Hanifin hasn’t be great at all this year. Ethan Bear has been fantastic. Big part of their success this year playing huge minutes. Especially if the cap does go up to the 85M range I’d fully expect Bear to get anywhere from $4.5M-$5.25M on a 5 year term.

He seems like a bridge candidate. Andersson has a larger NHL sample size.

I could see that happening as well. Definitely more of a gamble trying to get him long term. Thanks for the input though!

There's a couple of things I'd change.

I can't really see Green re-signing, at least for that amount of money. Also I wouldn't give Bear that much money.

Also that ARI trade...it seems unlikely for them to retain salary AND take a unnecessary cap dump.

I mostly like what you've done here. But it gets pretty much f*cked if the salary cap won't rise, which is a considerable possibility due to the season getting suspended/ending prematurely

Totally get where you’re coming from on these points. With Green my thought process was, he stays close to his hometown in the tail end of his career on a winning team. And he just came off making quite a lot of money with Detroit that it may not be his number 1 priority. But can definitely see him wanting to try and make as much as possible elsewhere in that case sign a depth guy for a 1x1 deal.

For Bear I did up the AAV quite a lot. The dollar amount may be better suited to a 7 year deal like Klefbom’s contract.

Arizona trade is fully dependent on the cap going up. Russell I wouldn’t say isn’t as much of a cap dump considering it’s his last year and would be easily moveable at the deadline or before. And if the cap does go up and Arizona doesn’t re-sign Hall they will have some money available that may make them okay retaining 2.5M for Stepan for a year.

Thanks for the input!

Bear will get a 2 - 3 year bridge the same as Nurse. With Bouchard passing him In the depth chart by year’s end.
Probably will have to add another piece to the Arizona trade.
Still would like to see AA gone. Didn’t want to see him at the deadline and it will take a miracle to turn his game around.
Ennis will only get the same as Archibald and Sheehan, which makes the three of them a great fourth line.

The AAV for Bear is ok (on the high end of the range IMO) but I'd like to see more term at that price.

I don't think Sheahan or Gagner get more than 1 year if they're re-signed at all.

Stepan is an interesting target. You might be able to get someone just as good in free agency for less money though.
