that line was apparently BUF's 2nd best this year. If that's the case, why not have them as a cheap fourth line? It's the middle six that needs work

Ik I just feel they need to move away completely from the tanking era and those are just reminders, might just be me idk, I've always wanted them gone so buffalo can fully restart, that and it wouldn't hurt to see what you have downstairs

tbh 2 of the better defensive F's in hockey. But neither of them bring a ton of offense to the table. They're 2/3rd's of a great shut down line.

The role of the fourth is not to save money...IMO its:
#1) DO NOT get scored on (that's Job-1),
#2) Allow the teams stars to get a "blow"/rest on the bench, and
#3) When your 'very short shift' is over - make sure the puck is on the attacking side of the centre line!!
    * crucial to the success of the stars in driving-the-bus and the team having success night after night!!

    * that semi-fossilized 4th line crew ^ ^ ^ will be chasing the puck all night chugga chugga....

If they are able satisfy that criteria as well as sign >2M cap hits, then that seems like an added bonus. Also fourth liners are not just guys who go out there to rest up the others. They have their role too, and if they have a scoring touch and their own addition to the team then that is far better than just resting up the others.
Those guys are still in their 20s and, have already proven to handle various positions well, and as Sagecoll said are defensively responsible at the same time.

Agree the fourth has to top out at between US$3-5M tops on almost every team (and in flat cap COVID - that's even more impt going forward).
There's no scoring touch in this group sorry - 8G's/12G's/6G's and IMO they will be in defensive mode too much (esp. in Buffalo).
Simmonds, unfortunately is a shell of his former self and is becoming the sad, sad journeyman. I like him, but his "NHL career-miles" are way harder than 95% of the 'floater-stickwaver' bunch that's impregnated the league at present. He is not effective w/ 10 min a nite. He's had a couple of years now to adjust in that mode and is still searching...

Ah so Simmonds is the problem. That's fine. It seemed as if you were opposed to the Girgensens/Larsson part of it, which make for a strong 2/3 of a line.

Simmonds can always be let go. I kept him here figuring that BUF wouldn't trade for him just to let him walk, even if it's probably the right move for them.

Lazar had a very strong resurgence year given where he was two years ago. He (or Tage Thompson) could take that spot instead.

    I'd try Tage personally.
I think Simmonds needs to be back in the Cup chase and can still have a role amongst one of the top group where the Stanley prospect is a bit more realistic...(STL, BOS, PHI, TB, WSH, COL...)

Calgary is not moving their #1 center for anything less then a better #1 center. That is not Reinhart, nothing against him just a really bad deal
