Description

This idea I believe is good for the NHL and for fans of teams that did not make the playoff system. The idea is to have the 7 bottom teams play for the top 2 picks, Detroit and Ottawa get byes in the first round LA vs Buffalo and Ducks vs New Jersey then winner of LA-Buff plays DET and winner of Ducks New Jersey plays Ottawa all best 3 out of 5. San Jose because they traded the pick does not get to play and Ottawa gets the #3 pick over all. The teams in the finals get the top two picks, then it drops back to points in the regular season. I believe this is good for both Detroit and Ottawa because they are going to have top 4 picks no matter what. And you earn what you earn on the ice, the players should like it because they have a hand in making there teams better. Ideas to make this idea better are welcome.

As fun as it would be for the fans, players would never agree to play a tournament for a reward they don't care about. Not only risking injury for nothing, but spending time away from family and friends

How does this benefit Detroit and Ottawa? Detroit has 18.5% chance of getting the #1 pick and they have a guaranteed top 4 pick already. Sens has 25% chance for the #1 pick and they have a massive chance to get a top 3 pick without playing for it (odds 38.8% with their own pick, 33.9% with the Sharks pick). In what way does it benefit them, when their advantage is basically similar to the draft lottery. And with the lottery they have at least a good chance to get the first pick. If they have to play for it, they most likely won't since they are the worst teams in the NHL for a reason.

This system would benefit the best teams out of the playoffs, so it doesn't come as a surprise that this is an idea by a Sabres fan
