Habs 2022

Created by: corson
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 1, 2020
Published: Jun. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the Habs do nothing but keep their own players would this team be good enough?

Assumptions:
I figure the cap would probably go up $2M for the 2021 season (not that it matters that much for us)
The Habs draft 8th over-all in 2020 draft and take Perfetti.
In the Seattle expansion I predict losing Chiarot

Questions:
1) Is our LD strong enough? will Romanov and Norlinder be a true #1 and #2 combo? or do we need to trade or sign a true #1?
2) Can either Brook or Juulsen replace Petry? and for how much longer will Weber still be a #1?
3) Are the contracts I gave out fair value? or correct length?
4) Should we keep Danault and trade Domi? or any other combo like that?
5) Would you change the line combo's?
6) Would you draft Perfetti or go for someone else?
7) What return could we get for in a trade for the players I placed on the LTIR?
8) Will the young kids be able to play up to expectations and carry this team?
9) Are there any young players that should be on the team by 2021 that I left in Laval? ie. Ylonen
10) Should we use this extra cap room to trade for players on 1-2 year bad contract from other teams in exchange for high draft picks or high end prospects? (I believe that is a yes)

Explanation:
I placed Danault, and Lehkonen on LTIR because I think the Habs should trade them in this off-season.
I put Petry on the IR because I am unsure if the Habs should trade him.
If we trade Danault, Lehkonen and Petry this off-season we will most likely miss the play-offs again but we would be so much better off for the 2021-22 season especially if we get a couple of high end prospects in return.
I wanted to have cap space available to re-sign the young core when their ELC's expire.

This is mostly for Hab ACGM's but any comments or concerns are welcome from anyone, I'm just wondering what moves other's think we should make going forward, line combo's, and I'm really unsure about the contracts I handed out.

After taking input from OldManWeber and Math731 I feel I need to stabilize the defense so I put Petry and Kulak as the second pairing and left Norlinder-Struble and Juulsen-Brook below them to show that they have the "potential" to move up and grab those spots. I think Mete-Fleury would be a solid third pairing thou.

I really like Norlinder but Id bet on Struble for a spot in 2021. This guy is elite and plays a similar style to McAvoy. Norlinder even though he's more skilled, is more likely to take some time before reaching the NHL. BUT he could still make it after one year in the SHL.

according to bob's list perfetti wont be there to take at 8. looks like it would be sanderson. which might be for the best. habs forwards look miles better than that defense. habs should be targeting defense prospects, especially rd.

I hope you are right about Struble I like the kid too. I thought Norlinder might have been closer. Thanks for the input

Yeah I worry about the right side. I had a post last week where I tried to take the Joker from Buffalo and the **** hit the fan when I did that.
    Good for a laugh though.

If you are reading The Athletic, there is an excellent analysis of Norlinders play and potential by Mitch Brown. It was made during the start of last years NHL season after the great season start of Norlinder in the Alsvenskan. His hands-eye coordination and skating are elite. Defensively, he uses his skating a lot and plays a really agressive style of play. The problems with him are apparently his decision making (especially defensively) and his selfishness. Not that he keeps the puck on purpose for too long but that his vision seems to be lacking.

He's also using the bigger ice a lot, which helps him looking good in europe (and plays a big role in his ability to have a bigger impact) but might negatively impact his venue in America

I feel we need to make a move to add a high end defenseman. Who would you suggest? I hate the idea of adding though UFA's and I think Sanderson would need at least 2 years to be NHL ready. I guess we could just be patient and wait. It's hard to trade for a high end D.

Honestly, Id just wait on our guys to develop. Next season will be really important in order to see who (out of Struble, Harris, Norlinder and Brook) might become a top 4 (or maybe a first pairing guy). Sanderson would make sense but at this point Id rather move up and draft a RHD like Drysdale (since we have a pletora of great LHD). Depends on whats the cost and whos picking

As painful as it will be the right thing to do is continue to build this team through the draft and be patient. Tough decisions need to happen with the likes of Gally, Tatar, Danault, Petry and Domi. We have some very intersting LHD prospects that we need to wait and see what we have in them. If Juulsen hadve been healthy all season I feel like losing Petry might be ok but with his lack of play Petry is needed. Ideally Petry stays on a 2-3 year deal which will allow Brook and whoever we draft this year
time to develop into his replacement. If he’s after a longer term deal then it will be tough to decide.

To me Domi stays and is played on the wing, Danault should stay because this team will dearly miss his stellar two way play. Tatar has been a nice addition but with so many young players coming up we need to play the young kids and also not get caught in cap hell when we have to pay younger players. His value should bring in a nice return and help build a young team.

The right side of the defense is something I wonder about as well. I looked at a scenario where we offer sheet Pulock and then trade Petry. This would be a solid defender that is more age appropriate with our younger players. If we were to offer sheet Pulock at $7,333,333.00 for 5 years, iI don't think the Islander could match with Teows and Barzal to sign as well. Then trade Petry with salary retained for a top six scoring winger. Re-signing Petry is going to cost us at least 5.5 Mil per season, and he will be 33 years old at the end of his current deal. Just how much money do we want to give a 33 year old and for how long?

Yeah I was concerned about his age too so I thought 2 years at $6M. If we could get him at 2 years and $5.5M I think we should keep him and if Juulsen or Brooks blow us away with their talents then move Petry at the trade deadline. Thanks for the input

Nobody noticed how keeping all those UFA signatures dont make any sense?

A 83M caphit post-covid with 8M on LITR and two rookies and the line up...

    People need to go :/

The line-up shows what the team could look like in 2021-22 season not the 2020-21 season. That's why Caufield and Perfetti are in the line-up.
The LTIR was meant to show players that needed to be traded.
I was asking other Hab GMs on their thoughts of who they thought should be traded or if they agreed with my list of players to be traded.
Also I used the scratches box to show left defense prospects within our system that have potential to grab the 2 LD spot and I used the IR box to show prospects who could grab the 2 RD spot.
It's not the typical format used on armchair but I was looking for input and suggestions to fix our team long term
This wasn't meant to be showing a final version of what the team would look like

what about Jordan Harris? Did we forget about him. He is much further along then either norlindr or struble. actually he was struble 's mentor this past year at northeastern.

I originally had Harris and Struble down in Laval and only had Norlinder in position to take the second pairing spot. I would love to see Harris take the spot. It is great that we have a few options on LD, not too long ago we had no options. Thanks for the input, I will move him up to the prospect spot too

Habs need someone who can score goals, they should draft Quinn or Holtz (at 8)

I agree that I would love a goal scorer with that 8th pick. Holtz might not be there at 8th but Perfetti might not be there at 8th either. Quinn would be an interesting selection and should be around at the 8 spot.
I think whoever we get if we still pick at 8th should be a solid addition to the team
