TOR isnt like other teams

Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 30, 2020
Published: Jun. 30, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What I mean is that because they have JT and AM who play so much minutes (Babcock triggered here) they don't really need a 100% true 3C, all they need is a bonified 4C and a 4C. That's it. If I were TOR, I'd move both Johnsson and Kerfoot and get a guy at C like Paquette, Eakin, Goodrow, Nosek, Larsson, Girgensons.

Now, you might ask who plays 2C if one of JT or AM go down with an injury...

Well there are 2 scenarios here:

1-they are out for the rest of the year, AKA LTIR. If such an awful scenario were to happen, I still don't believe TOR would be in deep sh*t. Since, say, JT gets put on LTIR his cap hit vanishes so a lot of cap space opens for Dubas to make a move... a player like Eric Staal would/could be the perfect fit IMO. His cap hit vanishes at the end of the 20-21 season so they don't have to worry about the cap.

In such a scenario the top 6 could look like this:

Hyman-34-Marner
Mikeyev/Robertson-Staal-Nylander

Still looks good IMO

2- JT is out for, say, a month. Well, if that happens, move WIlly to C and deal with the situation as well as you can.

Hyman-34-Marner
Mikeyev/Robertson-Willy-Kappy

If JT were to get injured, a guy like Staal would be perfect for Toronto. I'm just not sure the Leafs have what we'd be looking for in a trade and the Wild can't really afford to move Staal unless we make a move for a young top 6 center or Galchenyuk revives his career here.

I mean, I don't see Staal resigning in MIN after next year so basically anything that gets you a 2nd rounder for Staal is a win IMO since you don't lose him for nothing

Sure and that's important but he's gonna be 36 at the end of next offseason and 37 in 21-22, he's getting up there in age so I can see him signing somewhere else to win a cup

He's already won a cup. I'm sure he wants to win one again, but the Wild are at least competitive every year and we're super close to his beloved T Bay. He also revived his career here, so there's that. It's possible he signs elsewhere but if Guerin wants him back I'd be shocked if he didn't sign an extension and end up as our own version of Chara.

I mean fair enough but you're nowhere close to cup, Boldy and Khovanov and, say, Lundell, are still 2-3 years away from saving your C depth which stinks as I'm writing this

All it takes is to get in. Look at St Louis last year, they were horrendous the first half of the season. The Wild have been in the playoffs 6 of the past 7 years and are in the qualifying round this year.

Right but you can't even compare the team they had at the beginning of last year and yours. STL had a way better offense, D core as good and questionable G but still better than yours.

So your idea is for us to trade away our best center...? This is exactly why I said what I did in my first comment. Unless we find another good center, Staal is too valuable to trade. Boldy also isn't a C, he'll be a wing in the NHL.

If you know he isn't resigning then yes absolutely.

Sure but you add Kaprizov into the mix and factor in Fiala who scored 26 points in the last 18 games of the season and things aren't as bleak as you're making them out to be.

Yeah indeed I know they aren't complete garbage but when your C depth is 36 years old Staal, E-Ek, Galchenyuk (if he even resigns) and Donato, there's a problem here.

And if Staal and Galch walk, then we're left with Ek, Rask, Sturm and some AHL plug. We can't afford to trade Staal at this moment.

Things can happen until then... would you be interested in one of R.Strome, D.Strome, Roslovic, Bellows or Kerfoot?

Personally, no. Roslovic and Bellows aren't centers. R Strome was propped up by Panarin, D Strome is a pretty awful skater and he wants to slow the game down which I don't like in players. Kerfoot isn't talented enough IMO.

Strome was 0,5 PPG last year with us and was a 35 ish pts guy with Khaira and JP in 17-18...

Yeah we need more of a 60+ point guy, not a 35 point guy... Rangers would be selling extremely high on him as well, we likely wouldn't be getting what we'd be paying for.

Right but he is a very offensive minded player, which helps you, cause right now 2 of your 4 centers are very very defensive, E-Ek and Donato...

Also yeah we' be doing that, but GMs aren't as dumb as they used to be, I don't think Guerin would be moving a good prospect like Sokolov plus a 1st and a 3rd for him. I just don't think those kind of things happen anymore, and that's a good thing for the sport lol

Donato is the exact opposite of defensive, and he's not a center. Staal is very offensive, but Ek is defensive. I just don't like Strome for us at all, he's a middle 6 C that was propped up by Panarin based on the 5-10 Rangers games I saw this year. We need a top 6 guy.

I mean, in the 6-7 games of yours I saw this season Donato looked like a very good defensive 3C in the making

I like the post. Having a bonified 4C is a good idea, someone who can play on the PK.

If one of the top two Cs get injured for a short time, Spezza can replace. He's rejuvenated, and would be perfect for that, assuming he comes back next year.

He hardly played center this year, he was on the wing with Rask or Koivu most of the year. I thought he was pretty bad defensively.

If he has the choice between coming to Carolina, where he still owns a house btw, and staying in Minnesota, you really think he's staying in Minnesota?

Why do the Canes need him? You have Aho, Trocheck, Necas, and his brother
