TOR isnt like other teams

Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 30, 2020
Published: Jun. 30, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What I mean is that because they have JT and AM who play so much minutes (Babcock triggered here) they don't really need a 100% true 3C, all they need is a bonified 4C and a 4C. That's it. If I were TOR, I'd move both Johnsson and Kerfoot and get a guy at C like Paquette, Eakin, Goodrow, Nosek, Larsson, Girgensons.

Now, you might ask who plays 2C if one of JT or AM go down with an injury...

Well there are 2 scenarios here:

1-they are out for the rest of the year, AKA LTIR. If such an awful scenario were to happen, I still don't believe TOR would be in deep sh*t. Since, say, JT gets put on LTIR his cap hit vanishes so a lot of cap space opens for Dubas to make a move... a player like Eric Staal would/could be the perfect fit IMO. His cap hit vanishes at the end of the 20-21 season so they don't have to worry about the cap.

In such a scenario the top 6 could look like this:

Hyman-34-Marner
Mikeyev/Robertson-Staal-Nylander

Still looks good IMO

2- JT is out for, say, a month. Well, if that happens, move WIlly to C and deal with the situation as well as you can.

Hyman-34-Marner
Mikeyev/Robertson-Willy-Kappy

Why do the Canes need him? You have Aho, Trocheck, Necas, and his brother

Necas is a winger and Jordan is at best a 3/4 C right now. That would be why Carolina would be interested, also Trocheck can play on the wing and Staal is a Carolina legend.

Sure if Carolina offers him a contract I could see him signing with you guys over us, I just don't see a need for you. He would also be your 2C compared to our 1C and would be playing more here, but Carolina is easily a better team than the Wild and he'd have a better shot at a cup. I know Necas plays wing right now but he should be at center IMO.

The dude should not be a centre yet. They'll Aho him over in a few years which is why Eric makes sense to end his career here. He'd get roughly 20 minutes a night anyway, because he'd have Trocheck and Necas either side of him. Carolina would add a depth scorer, a club legend and when he does decide he wants to hang up his skates, they can put 12 up in the rafters. I'm not saying carolina will move for him, I'm just saying that if Carolina came calling, he'd 100% listen

If JT were to get injured, a guy like Staal would be perfect for Toronto. I'm just not sure the Leafs have what we'd be looking for in a trade and the Wild can't really afford to move Staal unless we make a move for a young top 6 center or Galchenyuk revives his career here.

I mean, I don't see Staal resigning in MIN after next year so basically anything that gets you a 2nd rounder for Staal is a win IMO since you don't lose him for nothing

If he has the choice between coming to Carolina, where he still owns a house btw, and staying in Minnesota, you really think he's staying in Minnesota?

If Staal still wants to play to win he won't be signing in Minnesota for Chara style deals - Wild are nowhere near the team the Bruins are - it's very very likely he just retires and enjoys Northern Ontario/Minnesota/Manitoba cottage country. Come 40 games in next season if Wild are looking like their usual meh selves Guerin should and probably will move him

would rather keep korshkov. Lou drafted him to become one of those bottom 6 wingers who is aggressive in puck battles, uses his body to check opposing players, and can and can score impressive goals. So far he has become that type of player. If Kapenan goes I fully expect Korshkov to take his place as he has shown he can play at the NHL level and will become that bottom 6 winger the leafs need.
