It's not as uncommon as you may think. Also, that doesn't get you Bonino + Ekholm.

But honestly, it is not an even trade. Ekholm could fetch more than that on his own, let alone adding Bonino. And NSH doesn't need any of those pieces - they are in win-now mode. How does trading a top 4 D (could be top 2 on a lot of teams) and one of the best 3Cs in the NHL help them win? That's why this trade doesn't work -- not enough value and the wrong pieces coming back.

I agree this is too light on the Sabres end, however if the deal were available the Sabres jump on it in a heartbeat.
