Description
I think the Isles win that deal overall, but the Flames get the better and younger C. Fellow Flames fans probably cuss me out for this one.

Tampa in cap trouble, this gives them a good young C who is already playing in the NHL and a decent pick. Offer sheet compensation for that contract would be a 2021 1st and 3rd, this offer is much better as they know the pick they are getting and get it right away, plus a young C with upside to plug right into their line up on an ELC still.

Ottawa has a ton of picks and can afford to stretch Bennett out and see if he finds something with an expanded role in a new environment. They've said they plan to use some of their stockpile of picks to acquire young players already in the NHL. Maybe they wouldn't be interested in Bennett, who knows? (Sens fans probably say no)

Anderson trade could be performance based with the 6th rounder moving all the way up to a 2nd rounder if scores a certain amount of goals/points etc over the two years. Comparable offer sheet is one 2nd round pick here.

Other than that, graduate Phillips/Gawdin, sign Leivo to fill out the RW and add Vatanen to round out the top 4 D. Also give Talbot another 1 year show me deal if he's willing. He had a good season and should probably get a look somewhere to be a starter, but if the market is squashed due to the shortened season and flat cap then the Flames would love to have him back for one more season. If not, the money is there for a quality back up.

Valimaki/Kylingotn\Yelesin\Mackey all in the running for bottom pairing D spots and are all able to shuttle back and forth from the AHL. Stone there for a veteran presence.

Expansion draft might be a crap show, as you have about 8 forwards you may want to protect and 4 dmen you want to protect, but that's the way she goes.

There is a 0% chance NYI trade Barzal if he's willing to sign 8 x $7.5m

Gee, you've given the Isles 3m more in cap hit. No thanks from the Isles, and the Isles keep the better player and players with more term. That's a whopping contract for Vatanen who is probably on the decline. soon
Middling Bennett doesn't get that return.

More cap hit but a net gain on the ice. Barzal is better than Monahan but Gaudreau is a monster compared to Beauvillier.

I would for sure, there could be a few options instead of Vatanen. I dont think Brodie stays in CGY though.

Different situations. Hamilton was not Boston's best player and face-of-the-franchise at the time -- and the trade was more about moving out a player with a perceived attitude problem, whether it was there or not (which BOS is no stranger to -- see Seguin). NYI has limited cap space for next season, so if they trade him (which I see virtually no scenario where they do), it will be because they cannot afford to sign him. They can afford to sign him at this price, so he will stay with NYI.

Isles say no. Monahan and Gaudreau are your guys, Barzal and Beauvillier are our guys. Your guys are better, but I think we'd rather build around what we have.

Fair enough, I'm just saying that you never know what's going on behind the scenes. You ask any Boston fan (and there are many other examples I'm sure) right before the Hamilton trade, and he was as untouchable as anyone could be. Lou might be worried there is an offer sheet coming that will mess up his cap structure but he'd have to match it, maybe there is lingering animosity between Trotz and Barzal over style of play and the benching that occurred. Maybe any combination of a number of circumstances would cause Lou to take this offer if it was on the table.

But hey, in the end I'm sure you're right and Barzal will stay on the Island.

It makes much more sense for the Jackets to just keep Andy and hope he bounces back for us rather than hope he bounces back for someone else and thereby maybe get another 2nd.
