Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the "flat cap" for the next year or two, I think there will be plenty of 1 or 2 year deals. Perhaps 3 years if a GM really likes a player.

All of the Pens NHL UFAs were let go. Most of the Pens RFAs were re-signed. Evan Rodrigues was let go. But this depends on how he performs in the playoffs (if he gets to play).

Bjugstad was traded to NJ for pick(s) and/or prospect(s). I believe NJ could use some forward depth and also has plenty of cap space.

Jack Johnson was traded to DET to fill a "veteran presence" in their defensive corps. Also was sent out for pick(s) and/or prospect(s).

Both of the above trades retained salary on each player: $1m and $500k, respectively.

[trade edit] These trades obviously don't have to go to NJ or DET. I'm just clearing cap space. If these two aren't moved then the Pens can't sign any UFAs and likely have to trade one or two RFAs. Bjugstad may even be on LTIR all of next season...

The goalie tandem was signed for $7.25m total with Murray signing a one year deal and Jarry signing a two year deal. Murray gets a slight pay increase that's not at the level of Gibson or Hellebyuck. But that's because it's just a one year deal and because Murray had a down year in 19-20. Jarry gets more than DeSmith because of potential and good recent stats. But not as much as Korpisalo because Korpi has had more solid years as a pro than Jarry. Oh, and DeSmith was traded to Florida who I believe needs a back up. Dustin Tokarski is then signed to a two way deal.

[goalie edit] I mistakenly thought Murray would be an RFA at the end of the one year deal. He isn't. I bumped his contract up $0.75m and added another year.

Based on brief talks with NYR fans, they don't think they'll re-sign Jesper Fast. Fast could fill a fast, defensively responsible role on the Pens team. Similar to what Pascal Dupuis did. He gets a 2 year deal at double of what he made previously ($3.7m/year). His deal expires, likely, when the cap goes up. Meaning he hopefully gets a chance to cash in even more with whatever team.

[Fast edit] Based on the goalie edit and other talks, Fast's cap hit needs to go down. I changed his hit to $2.9m/year.

The Pens seem happy having 8D on the team. Four of each handedness. There was a recent report that the Pens would like to sign a veteran bottom pairing defender than can play both sides to insulate the 6th thru 8th defender. I believe Dylan DeMelo can fill this role. He gets a two year deal of $1.8m per (also double his previous cap hit). DeMelo's contract also expires the same time as Fast's and hopefully has the same benefit.

In the Seattle draft, the Pens protect: Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Rust, Zucker, McCann, (the better of Blueger or Tanev), Letang, Dumoulin, Pettersson, and (the better of Murray or Jarry)

Yeah, that's pretty much what it'd have to be. You might get away with a 2021 1st, which will have slightly lower value from being a slightly weaker draft.

Johnson is not going to get traded. So everyone that like to tap about how many 1st it will take at just blowing hot air.

But to the goaltenders...

You signed Murray to a one year deal making him a UFA where he will walk for free. Bye bye.

You gave away DeSmith for a4th because, well, who knows, but, bye bye.

The Pens then need to expose Jarry who gets picked by Seattle. Bye bye.

That that worked well for Flyer fans...

The penguins wanted a 2nd for DeSmith last year. I guess we'll see what they do this year.

Jack Johnson has 3 years left and is getting up there in age and the cap situation in the league is bad so a first would probably be needing to go with him.

Gudbranson had 2 years left and is getting up there in age too. Plus he cost more!
The cap is the cap.
Every year people come up with imaginary reasons why X player should take a 1st to move. It was the same sh!znit last year for Gudbranson. He's this, that whatever...1st...
ok sure....cost nothing to move him.

How about the absolute shortage of defensemen in the league. How about the fact that when Seattle enters, there is 7 less defensemen to go around, when there already aren't enough good ones which is why so many teams have bad defensemen in their 3rd pairings. Or if you are TOR ceci as your 1RD!

There are a handful of teams who have really stacked defense pairings down to the 3rd pair. 1/2 of the teams in the league pretty much has a JJ level player if not more.
So yeah, he'll get moved. It won't cost that much. Because that's how it really is. Which is why guys like Brendon Smith are making 4.5 million per or Polak got 1.75. or Pateryn 2.25, Or Alzner paid through the nose.
I mean really I can go on. But what difference does it make if you are incapable of joining the rest of us in reality.

Gudbranson is only 28 and has 1 year after this one while Johnson has 3. Gudbranson was also traded before the flat cap and people thought the cap was gonna go up, now teams are gonna struggle to keep everyone which is why someone like Johnson would require a first or a player around the same value to give up. If teams are desperate to get rid of bad contracts than they need to give up something else with them. From Detroit's pov why would they give a 3rd for Johnson and not get any value back? It's easy to make a trade that makes sense for you, but you need to look at why the other team would take that trade as well.

I'm not saying Detroit should give up a 3rd.
What I'm telling you is it doesn't take a 1st to get rid of JJ.
There is a huge difference. Actually read what I type instead of assuming I think this is "fair."
Defense is always in need. Especially as guys get hurt. They have already stated they are planning a full season next year. While JJ might not be moved at deadline. There will be teams looking for defense in the year before the TDL. So it's a whopping 2 years or 1 more year than Gudbranson but at less cost and an easier buyout.

And while they might not get anything back for him. It won't cost an arm and a leg to move him. Much like it didn't to move Gudbranson.

The long term outlook is saying that Murray would be an RFA at the end of the one year deal. Am I missing something?

Edit: Looks like the long term outlook is wrong. Pens could still re-sign him come January 2021. And I forget how soon-to-be UFAs are handled at the expansion draft.

Protect the better of Blueger and Tanev and let the best of the three in ZAR go 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️(also agree with pharow and Yojimbo on the goalie thing being just about as bad as we can do)
