Pietrangelo 8 Yrs 9 AAV- 4th to STL and New Lines

Created by: LouRules
Team: 2020-21 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 18, 2020
Published: Jul. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Winnipeg wins lottery and drafts Lafreniere.

Vancouver loses qualifier swaps firsts.

Carolina and Vatanen win qualifier, send their 2020 3rd.

Arizona wins qualifier, first, second, and conf semis (loses in 7 to Vegas in conf finals) sends pick 27, upgrades 2021 conditional 3rd to a 2nd.

Before the draft, the Devils add a significant prospect to their team, coming to terms with Reilly Walsh and watching him play in Binghamton with some cups of coffee rather than miss the entire Ivy League season.

(7) Alexander Holtz RW
(27) Justin Barron RHD

Before free agency the Devils send the Blues a 4th round pick for the negotiating rights to Pietrangelo, in a transaction hoping to hit on the next Scott Stevens. The Devils use their cap space not to help some other team and accrue assets, but instead hire a true difference maker, best at his position, league renowned leader, and captain of the team for the next eight years.

In an unexpected and lucky move, Hall re-signs with Arizona after their conference final cup run. This upgrades the 2021 conditional pick again, from a 2nd to an unprotected 1st.

To finish the offseason the Devils bring back former captain Andy Greene to pair with Pietrangelo for limited even strength minutes and to eat up plenty of penalty kill time.

Jack Hughes comes back a year later looking like Hercules and picks up on the chemistry of the Bratt Zacha Gusev line immediately.

Miles Wood on the second line with Hischier and Palmieri is an interesting Lindy Ruff choice with the hope Wood can elevate his game to become a budget Tom Wilson.

All four of the bottom line wing positions are filled with young promising players with limited experience. This is their audition season with more heralded prospects Foote LW and Holtz RW a year from contributing. My guess is Ryan Merkley is a legit middle 6 player and Mike McLeod will be a valuable, inexpensive defensive 3rd/4th line center and the others will eventually be replaced.

I mean, you're only getting an extra week after the trade, and if Pietro would need that extra week of negotiating, it might not be worth it. Just gotta open up the checkbook and outbid everyone else

    I wouldn't give a 30 year old an 8 year contract

You can't give 8 years to a player that isn't on your roster by the time the TDL passes, 7 years is the max.

Doesn't matter. Hanifin wasn't eligible for an 8 year deal when he was traded to CGY. Have to be property of that team before the TDL passes for 8 years to be on the table

I mean, if Vegas doesn’t pick up Barron if he’s still there I’d be fuming, if a team picks him up before Vegas Pick they be doom

Yikes man. Comparing Peitrangelo to Stevens is a massive stretch. Just out of curiosity, did you watch the Devils in the 90s/00s? I’m curious what you think makes their games so similar.

Agreed with above about giving a 30 year old a 7/8 year deal. No thanks.

Sami needs to play 12 regular season games or 70% of the playoff games. No guarantee!

I love the optimism here! We need more of this.

Carolina don't owe New Jersey any pick because the restrictions for the 4th weren't met. Therefore, it doesn't matter what happens in the playoffs, the pick cannot upgrade because we don't owe you a pick

Dude even trading for rights, It's still only 7 years only St Louis can offer Pietrangelo 8 years the rest 7 years. Acquiring his rights only means you can negotiate a deal sooner.

Didn’t realize. Thanks for the correction. Unfortunately the best chance the Devils have at a talent like Pietrangelo is with an 8th year. We’ll see.

Haven’t seen this verified. I would not speak on it so definitively if I were you two, could be a disappointment. Especially with many conditional picks still negotiable.

I think it’s less of a stretch than you think. Stevens is inarguably a higher pedigree player when the Devils acquired him than Pietrangelo currently is. But both were top 5 picks, produced roughly 450 points in their first 10 seasons. Stevens point production was more impressive as those were his age 18-28 seasons versus 20-30 for AP. Coincidentally they’d both be coming from STL albeit only a year there for SS, and in my scenario above the Devils were taking an odd route to acquire him, just like SS.

It’s because I was a fan of the 95 team and saw great blue liners perform well into their thirties for this team that I think a deal like this for the best available at his position is worth it.

In my scenario above Vegas goes to the Stanley Cup Final, I don’t think you’ll be worried about missing Barron if that happens!

I get held up on the comparison because Stevens was a force on his own blue line. When I think of SS, I think of a brick wall defender delivering mind-altering (literally) hits that generated his “top-10/15 all time” reputation. Admittedly, I haven’t watched much Blues hockey, but I don’t get the sense that AP is that type of player.

Far points in terms of how both players were/would be acquired and point production!

What the league is saying today is different than what our GM said two weeks ago. Obviously he was wrong but he may not have expected this bubble thing to actually come to fruition.
