Somehow you keep forgetting that you need more money saved next year than year after. Also worth noting that Eriksson Ek is younger than Kerfoot by like 3 years and better overall player than him plus more fitting for what the leafs want in terms of salary for 20/21 season. Kapanen is worth early 2nd or very late 1st. Minnesota has the PIT pick and their own early in 2nd. Both could be good prices for Kapanen.

Save salary, get better player for 3C role and get also fair value for other player. Thats how I think when I look at that trade.

Funny. Not that I care about much about hit numbers, but this team threw hits even less frequently under Keefe. With the exception of Muzzin, other teams could just cycle against this D-core all game without breaking a sweat, and they might as well bring a lawn chair with them when they park in front of the Leafs' net. If the Leafs go into next season with a D-core that soft and bad they miss the playoffs, and not by a little bit.

I honestly think Eriksson Ek would be a good piece for the Leafs. If you’re a Leafs fan you probably want to keep Kapanen, but I think JEE brings a reliable defensive presence that the Leafs don’t have in their forward core and when that’s developed properly, it could be very valuable.

Kerfoot might be worth a 2nd, but not to the Wild, especially after the year he just had. Maybe if they plan to play him in a more offensive role, that could be good for him. A second round pick just seems like a high-ish price to pay, especially when you’re acquiring a player who’s upside probably won’t lift you out of your mediocrity. But to a more competitive team (Edmonton or Dallas strike me as better destinations), it could make a little more sense.
