Trying to Fix the Leafs

Created by: chapplez
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 15, 2020
Published: Aug. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Challenged to try to fix the Leafs defence while NOT trading one of the 'Big 4'.
-The forward core suffers the most; Johnsson, Kapanen and Kerfoot are moved out, so the 3rd line does get worse.
-Trade for Iafallo helps with salary cap, on paper he was rather similar to Kapanen in terms of production.
-Andersen is moved because realistically, the Leafs are not going to be able to re-sign him unless one of those Big 4 are moved.
-Tanev has been mocked to the Leafs before, and I like pairing him with Rielly.
-Jarry trade takes advantage of the Pittsburgh goalie situation with Seattle right around the corner. He is 25 and showed he can handle the pressure. Consistency will be key for him.
-Biggest 'if' I think is if Holl can actually be moved. If he can, the Tanev signing can happen, but apparently he has a NTC. If Holl cannot be moved, keep Holl and Kerfoot, Tanev cannot be signed.
-Sandin, Liljegren, and Marincin will be fighting for the 6th spot on D.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Jarry, Tristan [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Pittsburgh will lose either Jarry or Murray to Seattle, 100% if they keep both of them. This way, Pittsburgh clears the way for DeSmith to be the backup to Murray and they get a solid OHL prospect that they can use as trade bait if they wish.
PIT
  1. Der-Arguchintsev, Semyon
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Younger replacement for Andersen, probably can get him on cheaper bridge deal.
2.
TOR
  1. Nylander, Alexander
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (PIT)
  3. 2022 4th round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
26 pts in 71 games, can be a cheap forward for the Leafs to throw in for some depth. May give him extra motivation to play with his brother.
CHI
  1. Andersen, Frederik
Additional Details:
Clears a lot of cap for Toronto after the Jarry trade; Chicago gets a goalie that they can sign for the future to replace Crawford (note that Crawford is a UFA)
3.
TOR
  1. 2020 4th round pick (COL)
  2. 2020 5th round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Decent depth for the Avs, not exactly a pricey pickup either. This trade could happen with another 'contender' team, not necessarily COL.
COL
  1. Engvall, Pierre
  2. 2020 6th round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Cap dump. 1.25 for fringe player is not going to fit with this Leafs team.
4.
TOR
  1. Dumba, Matt
Additional Details:
Dumba will never have lower value after a 'down' year by his standards. Still has a positive Corsi at 51% last year, career average is 52%. Fenwick was 51.6% last season. Dumba got a 86.7% save percentage when he was on the ice last season - by far the worst he has ever got in his career. You pair Dumba with a guy like Muzzin and this works wonders.
MIN
  1. Dermott, Travis [RFA Rights]
  2. Johnsson, Andreas
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
MIN gets a solid offensive talent in Johnsson they can pair with Fiala, a decent young defenseman with potential to grow further, and a second rounder in a deep draft. This is a good return for Minnesota.
5.
TOR
  1. 2021 2nd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Center depth for BUF, could use this.
BUF
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
  2. 2020 4th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Cap reasons; gotta dump him. Get a 2nd in return.
6.
TOR
  1. 2021 3rd round pick (WPG)
  2. 2022 5th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Winnipeg needs defence so maybe?
WPG
  1. Holl, Justin
  2. 2020 7th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Why was he signed for a 2M by 3???
7.
TOR
  1. Iafallo, Alex ($1,212,500 retained)
Additional Details:
LA retains 50% to get the 2nd rounder. LA gets younger player, who is signed, who could have the higher potential.
LAK
  1. Kapanen, Kasperi
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Iafallo put up 43 pts in 70 games, on a bad LA team. Could be solid for the Leafs, helps save cap for the year as well.

Chicago can’t take on Anderson’s cap and you aren’t getting that haul for him.

COL declines. No room (or interest) for a bottom 6F

There’s no way Minnesota gives up Dumba for less than one of your big guns. Or at least a first round pick and a high caliber player.

Your TOR bias is showing. Freddie was 30th in SV% last year (25+ games played) and is a pure rental. Has a cap hit of $5M. Jarry is 5 years younger...more cost controlled than Freddie...and played better last year. BUT to the real point......TOR is giving up FAR less to acquire the more valuable...Jarry. Essentially (2) 3rd round picks. BUT when it comes to selling your goalie...you're trying to get a rookie who was 7th in scoring amongst all rookies AND a 2nd round pick.

Chicago has Crawford and his $6M off the books - Andersen has a $5M cap. Do they have to resign someone I'm missing?
COL is a placeholder team, I'm sure someone would be interested.
Minnesota could definitely push for a 1st rounder, I was trying to avoid trading any of the Big 4.

Hawks can resign Crawford, who was better then Anderson facing more shots, and not give up anything plus Crow will be $4Mish to sign for a couple years. Even if the Hawks were interested in Anderson, the value is way off....he's a 1 year UFA rental.

Fair point on Andersen both exo and ChiHawk. I was struggling in terms of what team needs goaltending - if not Chicago, I'm not sure where else to move him.

Pittsburgh is looking to trade Murray, not Jarry. It's fairly clear this will happen this offseason since both need contracts and the team can't afford both. Expansion draft isn't really the issue.
