Best Defensive Version_Wash Cap 20-21

Created by: All_Knowing
Team: 2020-21 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 17, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Defense: As much I would love to keep Dillon, TJ Brodie is just a better overall defender. He was struck with injury this year, which is why the Caps could get him for touch less than his current contract (maybe even more of a discount). He would fit in well in the top 4. Sign Rutta as a cheap 7th d-man right-hander who can fill in where need be.

Scoring Depth: Jesper Fast had a career year on the Rangers. With the Rangers depth at forward, they may pass on resigning him (this could be hopeful on my part). He would make the Caps third line really DANGEROUS (offensively and defensively). I wanted to look into Craig Smith, but his inconsistency is just too worrisome.

Goalie Tandem: Need to sign a veteran goalie, as the Caps cannot have a sophomore goalie and a rookie goalie as their tandem. IF (big if) Cam Talbot is willing to sign for another 1 year deal (fourth year in a row) and be willing to split 50/50 with Sammy, this would be a fantastic tandem. Then you could use that $3mill to sign OVI/Vrana the following year.

Center/Faceoffs: As much as people want McMichael to be ready, that just won't happen, especially after zero experience in Hershey. Sign Nick Shore, a cheap center who just came off of a season where he had 55% faceoff wins (380 attempts overall -> solid amount) and a very good defensive year. He could plug in where need be.

Extra Forward: Tobias Rieder is a fantastic depth player who dominates on the penalty kill. He would be a solid add in anywhere in the lineup.

so youd rather send Mcmichael back to the OHL than give him a shot in the nhl? Also why even trade Panik then sign Fast. lateral move at best. Panik down year he scored 22 points in 59 games while also having really solid defensive numbers. (.37ppg) Fast in a "career year" 29 points in 69 games (.42 ppg) in an 82 game season assuming both player are healthy and what not Fast best year vs a down year for Panik is 4 points different. i would rather just keep Panik and hope he bounces back or play how he finished the season last year. Hag is a 4th line player and is only good at the Pk. thats a great thing to be good at but using him on the 3rd line kills any momentum that line could create. Talbot is having a great playoffs i doubt he'll want to sign to play backup to Sammy. Dillion has been great maybe itll be worth it to sign him and Brodie and try to move a different player? imo it makes sense to play CM at wing get him adjusted to the NHL. give you ELC at a position of need and frees up cap space to resign or sign a UFA. you could trade Panik or Hags to NJD/anywhere that need depth and has cap not sign Fast. might have enough cap to sign Dillion. capitals need to improve on defense. trade jensen....something drastic needs to change or you can expect similar results

I think you're underpaying Brodie a bit. I also disagree that he's a better defender than Dillon. He'll put up more points, but Dillon is better in his own end IMO.

Evolving hockey has projections for Brodie at 3 years, $4.9M or 5 years at $5.5M. They have Dillon at 4 years @ $3.7M.

Unless you're looking to add scoring from the blue line (not necessary for the Caps IMO), you should probably stick with Dillon.

Ok then trade Hags. Paying $2.75mill for a "fourth line player" is far too much, especially with a team up against the salary cap. Talbot stated that he would sign somewhere to play 50/50 for a year if it is a cup contending team. Jensen has had a good end of the year / playoffs. I do see your point on on Dillon -> I was hesitant on him or Brodie. As far as McMichael -> you do not want to rush a prospect to the NHL. He has no NHL experience (no AHL experience either). The report on him is that he lacks consistency. Say he has a bad few games, that could ruin a player's confidence. Why rush when you have other options...?

hes not able to play in the AHL so its either NHL or back to the OHL. I'd risk playing him rather than wasting another year in th AHL.... 102 points in 52 games basically tells you everything you need to know

102 points in 52 games in the OHL...That is very different than the NHL...especially for a 19 year old

Also - 1) Fast played on a star studded line with Panarin and Strome so that takes away from points 2) he played on the rangers who are a dump and chase. If your point is to keep Panik, great. But trade Hags then and sign Fast to complete a Panik, Eller, Fast 3rd line.

I've personally never heard consistency ever being an issue with McMichael, watching him play games in the OHL this year he's always looked good. I'd at least play him in the introductory 9 game NHL stint to see how he handles the faster and more physical play. Then we can decide from there based on those games. But I wouldn't be too opposed to him playing in the O again next season. There are always areas of the game to improve on, even if you're scoring 2 ppg like McMichael was doing. Especially with a really good juniors coach in Hunter.
