Canucks

Created by: Reason
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 18, 2020
Published: Aug. 18, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
My Plan:

This roster was created with three goals in mind: stay competitive in 2020-2021, not give up significant assets to move bad contracts, have space to resign Pettersen and Hughes after next season.

Assumptions:

There are a few assumptions. One being Podkolzin signs as expected after his KHL season. Two, that Ferland ends up on LTIR, I hope he doesn’t and there is cap space on this roster if he is healthy.
If Ferland is on LTIR long term, this team will have over 20 million in free cap space next year. If they need more, Eriksson’s contract will only have one year remaining with very little actual money owed, this should significantly reduce the cost to trade him.

Thanks for thinking of us but, the Leafs can't afford a six million dollar underachieving defensman.

I have no clue why the Canucks pursued Myers the way they did. I didn't think that was a good idea then and now they are stuck with it.

PS... They could do better than that if they want to move Boeser, Virtanen and Benn. (Which seems like a lot going out IMO).

I was actually thinking of you when I wrote this, you’ve posted that on every hypothetical trade involving either of these two players!
I listen to hours of Vancouver sport talk every week and it sounds like both those players are available according to insiders, some have gone as far to say they would be surprised if Virtanen is with the team next year.

Boeser only gets moved if they sign Toffoli, and for Virtanen he is a cost controlled RFA and for a team with cap problems he is a huge asset.

Fair comment on the Leafs trade. Obviously they have significant cap issues and would have to make other deals before hand, I believe those other trades are coming.
Agree Myers is overpaid but it costs assets to acquire second pairing RD, this is essentially a giveaway without TO giving anything tangible up.

As for the getting more for the others. Craig Button said the other day Virtanen would fetch a second round pick, personally I would rather round out my LD with a physical/reliable/good cap hit bottom pair D than take a second rounder.

Boeser might be able to fetch a bit more but Fabbro is already a second pair RD with top pair upside, first rounders are a valuable asset. Might be able to get a bit more but I don’t think it’s that far off, maybe throw in a prospect?

Totally agree with you regarding the Boeser comment. Personally I think Boeser is a better player and long term option than Toffoli, with that said Canucks need to move pieces to stay under the cap, and I believe their greatest need is a young RD. Add the first rounder as a cost effective piece moving forward and I think it’s a good asset management move.

I think Virtanen is easily a 3+ million player. I’m not against keeping him but again the team has cap issues and he is an easily movable piece that could fetch a decent return. With the expectation Podkolzin will sign after the KHL season and having resigned both Toffoli and Levio I think he is an expendable piece who could be moved in order to shore up the defence, which was the Canucks weakest position this season.

If Boeser is moved, you have to think someone like Eriksson or Sutter is moved alongside with him.
