You don't want to have to rely on a guy who had some of the worst stats in the league last year to produce.
Who do you mean? Kakko? lol? The guy was 18 years old playing paltry third line minutes on the youngest team in the league. Are you implying he's a bust? All of a sudden he isn't the Rangers 1RW of the future? With that logic, lets do this instead....swing a three team deal and send Tarasenko to the Devils ....just have them send Hughes to the Rangers since he's a bust too! Makes more sense already! lol
I truly don't understand the logic behind your statement at all, but I'll take a stab at a reply anyway...
Yes, the Rangers
DO want to rely on him, that's why they drafted him. Moving him to the 2nd line is the logical progression for his growth. If he isn't somehow up to the task (doubtful)...the Rangers (again) have RW options up and down the lineup who can easily step in. Strome had a career year and Panarin was on pace for 100 points playing with JESPER FAST as their RW lol. Kakko will do just fine!
I'm going to predict it now, Kreider or Panarin see time at RW this season, and I have a feeling Buch gets moved. Not because they need RW's, but because they have to make space for Lafreniere to get top 6 minutes, it would be foolish to do otherwise. Which just underlines the fact that Kakko needs to also be getting top 6 minutes this season. A mix of say:
Panarin Mika Kakko
Laffy Strome Kreider...
or
Laffy Mika Kreider
Panarin Strome Kakko
Gives both lines a kid with two vets to carry the weight and teach them a thing or two.
I will say it again because winning the first pick in the draft seems to have given people amnesia. The Rangers are the youngest team in the league! Hence
R E B U I L D I N G! Having your draft picks grow into the lineup and become what you'd hoped is part of that process. The idea that they suddenly trade assets for a 28 year old (as great as he is) $8m player who plays a position you're loaded at....to stunt the growth of all of your other winger prospects in the organization....is completely counter to what the Rangers plan has been over the last 3 seasons! You don't go 3/4 of one season into Kakko's progress (not to mention Kravtsov) and just give up on the guy by putting a bunch of veterans in his way. For better or worse, their playing this kid and are going to give him every opportunity to prove he can't do the job. I would really question Gorton's and JD's thinking if they did otherwise!
Again, the clear and glaring need is at 2C. Trading 2 1st rounders, a potential starting goalie and a 2/3LD should be able to easily solve that issue, and would be a much better use of their assets.
Sorry, I assumed you were a Ranger fan. Being a Blues fan helps explain the proposal as a feeler without a firm understanding of what the org thinks of Kakko or the team as a whole. But again...as someone familiar with the Rangers, this deal just doesn't work.
