Leafs won't retain on Andersen. He's already on a good deal. But maybe Jensen and a prospect would work

Just trying to figure out a good fit for both clubs, from a neutral fan.

Leafs could use Hathaway and Jensen, and the Capitals need to shed cap & get a veteran 1a for Samsonov.

Even though it's good value for a pending UFA it's not what the leafs need

A bottom pair d-man, a 4th line overpaid grinder, a career AHL goalie and a mid round pick.. you think they should accept that? It doesn't offer them much of what they need and it adds to the cap when they're trying to move Andersen to free up cap space

I think the Leafs would be looking at more of a package like Jensen, a 4th or 5th round pick, and either Brett Leason or Lucas Johansen

Jensen could be a decent fit with Sandin on the bottom pair. But Hathaway doesn't fit in and he's overpaid. What would you think of Jensen, a 4th, and either Brett Leason or Lucas Johansen instead?

Leason + Jensen + 4th sounds fine.

Caps are probably going with Samsonov-Vanecek next year so don't think they need Andersen.

Leafs might want a condition on the pick to improve it depending on how far the Caps go. But I think it fits both teams

1 question.... Why?

Freddy Andersen is a legit #1 goaltender. By all accounts Ilya Samsonov is going to take that job.... Why would you spend assets and cap space on a goalie who is going to want to own the net, when there are guys like Khudobin, Howard, Craig Anderson, Condon, or Ryan Miller available via free-agency. All of whom are more than capable of player 30-35 games, and will come a 1/3rd of the salary, and cost no assets to obtain.

This would be a strange move.

It doesn't fit both teams because the Caps have no interest in Andersen. Maybe a cheap vet backup to play 30-35 games if they're not confident in Vanecek, but Andersen's overkill for that role and takes up cap room they need to shore up the defense.

Samsonov was hurt in an ATV accident over the summer and was unfit to play for the postseason. There's no telling the timeframe when he'll be 100%.

Samsonov also doesn't have that much experience to just be thrown the role of a starter on an elite team. Still be smart to have a guy there to ease him into it and if he falters they have Andersen to fall back on

Jensen is a fine RD with good underlying numbers who got off to a bad start in DC when asked to skate on his off-side and no regular partner / spot in the lineup. With a stable pair next season he'll be a fine 3rd pair RD who can easily out perform his cap hit. No need to move him at all. (Now, you want Michal Kempny, great. Orlov should be available for a good offer. But Jensen is one of two RD on the Caps or close to ready in the system.)

In the unlikely event that Samsonov is not fit to be the Caps goalie, they'll make an offer to Holtby. Andersen serves the Caps needs exactly zero. It's not that he's a terrible player, he's just not a fit in DC at all. Like the Leafs, caps need a solid 2-way right shot defenseman, plus a cheap veteran goalie, and an maybe an injection of youth and speed on the bottom six (or maybe a top six winger). Andersen just isn't what the Caps are using assets for.

Still, a trade for a starting goalie doesn't make sense.... There are plenty of veteran 1B goaltenders available, that will be much cheaper than this trade. At least 4 guys who could take the net, if needed. There's no reason to trade these asset for Andersen... It would be a poor management decision.

Still this trade makes no sense with so many decent veteran goalies available in free agency this year... Why trade a bunch of assets for one?
