Habs decline, major overpayments.

IMO

A) Laine had difficult contracts negociations, and it is not over because he will still be RFA at the end of his contract.
B) Laine is not essential to Winnipeg's offense and he doesn't contribute much else than sniping abilities.
C) Winnipeg was in Contender mode before their Dcore dissapeared... Could be back in the game if they would be able to built it back quickly.
D) Related to A), Laines value might be at his peak if Winnipeg want to trade him. As his contract shorten, teams will be willing to give less.
E) Rumors! But by actual journalists...

Those pieces are nice add-ons. You just need to pick a couple and add them to Suzuki and the Jets may call you back.

Why the hell does it make sense to trade four valuable pieces when all we need to do is be patient for another year or two. Caufield could very well be a better goal scorer than Laine. He is arguably the best pure goal scorer out of the last handful of drafts. It makes zero sense to trade away him and other valuable assets for one player who is streaky and will be asking for a contract he isn’t worth.
