Aggressive Approach

Created by: Duggysdanglers
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 5, 2020
Published: Sep. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Aggressive moves to get the Oilers in a stronger position right away. Holland may not do this.
Neal trade frees up cap space. Paying a big price to do it. Carolina trade helps them clear cap space to grab one of those top G’s. Russell trade clears cap space and Ottawa gets top 4 D and only pays out $1.5 m in actual money. Maroon comes homes. Need an energy line. Holland knows Mrazek so he comes over. Holds the fort until another young G steps up. Oilers draft Askarov at #14 and develop him nicely. Sign Gagner for old times sake. He works hard. Right shot C.

In what world does Russell return a pick... and a 2nd rounder at that.

4M is way too much for a declining 3rd pairing D.

Trochek is worth more than that by himself. Puju will have to show something to get established talent In return trade value. The other 2 are tweeners with little value. You’d be lucky to get more than a 5th for them.

He only gets $1.5 m in actual money. That the value.

No. Not really. He’s a UFA in 2 years and Mrázek in one year. The return for Carolina has all kinds of long term potential. And they potentially get a solid young RW for their top six. I almost wanted another pick included.

Yes really. Canes aren’t moving their 2c for a bust RW that is did good in Europe. No team does. Puljujarvi doesn’t have the value Oilers fans think he does.

Canes didn’t even spend that much to acquire him.

Notice it’s also a late 2nd round pick.

Since Florida made a questionable move to let him go, Carolina has to make one in return? That isn’t a thing

I personally think that’s great deal for both. Carolina will be swinging for the fences in the G market so they’ll need cap space. Plus I believe Necas is going to be their 2C.

OTT declines.

No interest in paying for Russell at tall. Set on D. EDM can pay OTT to dump the cap though if they please

Brannstrom, chabot, lassi thomson, JBD, and not to mention the fact that we have no use for a 33 year old decling dman. We already have zaitsev

The Carolina trade is so bad. They trade a 2c and their goalie for TRASH.

IDC what Oilers fans think he can become but he isn't it and hasn't shown any signs of being better than a bottom 6 forward. Also why is Edmonton trading for a center when they already have Mcdavid, draisaitl and RNH

Those UFA contracts are really bad, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it. None of those guys are worth more than $700k x 1.

Gagner should be $900,000 actually. Thought more about that later. I think Maroon is possibly fair considering he might end up with 2 Cups.

Maroon is 32 and coming off a 1 x $900k contract. He's not getting more than that on his next deal. You'll notice he signed that deal 2.5 months after winning the Cup, so I don't think winning another is suddenly going to boost his value either.

I figured he took a pay cut to join a contender with limited cap space. Edmonton usually has to overpay UFAs.
You are bang on about the UFAs. I adjusted Gagner and Beaulieu.

I don't think there's any evidence of that, at least since McDavid and Draisaitl joined the team. Most high-end wingers jump at the chance to play in Edmonton, they wouldn't have to be overpaid.

The last 2 on that list are not NHL ready and Russell gives them a year to develop without putting them into the pros too soon. A late 2nd rounder is not the huge of a price for this deal. He’s a placeholder for sure but he’s in the top of the NHL year after year for blocked shots. He’s great to pair with a younger D like Brannstrom. It’s a win win. Ottawa has approximately 13 picks this year and 10-14 next year. They can easily afford this one and it’ll pay off for them.

He brings lots of intangibles and he’s a fan fave. I think the Oilers will not mind paying him. You make a great argument but he could very likely take lesser deal in a much warmer climate too.

Again tho absolutely no reason to. Jaros, Zaitsev, Lajoe, Hainsley all are good enough for rn. Plus there is always the options of resigning boro and demelo. I just think ottawa has no reason to give up a second for something they can get for free

What about a third or fourth round pick? Russell is still better than those guys rn. Boro is a heart and soul player but his play will decline due to injuries. Hainsay is 40 but still decent. Doesn’t block nearly as many shots. Lajoie and Jaros are fringe NHLers.

I can see that. Still, lajoie and jaros are young guys who deserve a shot to prove themselves, and if we can’t get demelo back i can see a deal like this
