From my perspective, Buffalo would be willing to take on Fleury's contract (and maybe even retain a little on Hutton), but I'd want something else of value in return from Vegas.
Flower is great, but at thins point he's a past-his-prime 35 year old who is vastly operpaid for his current production. You guys know this, that's why you're trying to trade him to bring back Lehner. Ullmark was better this year, so Fleury would be coming in as our 1B as best.
The Sabres can afford his contract but putting $7 mil into a backup goalie position would prevent us from making other trades or signing free agents to otherwise help our team, so obviously not the preferred option. Not to mention that his contract stems into 2022 when we'll need to re-sign Dahlin and Jokiharju. That's why I wouldn't take this offer as-is (even before the draft pick). I hope that makes sense.
My counter: Fleury and Tuch for Hutton ($750k retained), Tage Thompson, and a 2020 4th.
Tuch fills a big top 6 RW hole for the Sabres, and is the incentive for us to take on Flower's cap hit. Obviously it'll be hard to deal Tuch after how he's played in the playoffs, but Vegas has proven this season that they are plenty effective without him in the top 6.
Thompson should eventually be able to slide into the 3RW spot that Tuch spent the bulk of the year in, and is cost controlled. Thompson was a very raw prospect and was probably called up before he should have in Buffalo, but he has tons of talent and I'm fairly confident can be a solid secondary scoring line contributor as early as next season.
I threw in the retained money on Hutton and the draft pick with the intention of accounting for Tuch's jump in value this postseason.
I think that's a framework that can work for both teams, but let me know what you guys think!
