I would rather wear a Corey Perry jersey, than see NSH make this trade.

Nashville has been looking for an elite winger for years. This is their chance to make a splash. They've been successful in recycling defenceman out over the years since their scouts draft defense very well. It is a trade that makes sense for both parties.

Good luck getting any owner to sign off on retaining that much money on a guy the organization not only uses heavily on the ice but markets around off the ice.

The Kings have lost a lot of market share in LA due to the rise of the Rams, Lakers, and Clippers. After Doughty's abysmal season, this is their chance to bring in picks and young players to build for the future. They aren't going to make a lot of profit marketing Drew Doughty over athletes like LeBron and Aaron Donald.

Marner is very good, but he's not an elite player (gets paid like one though). Josi on the other hand is elite. I wouldn't trade the best defenceman in hockey right now for Marner straight up. Tacking on Arvidsson is madness. It absolutely makes sense for TOR, but sets NSH back for years.

But they need to stay relevant with other names like those around. I agree it might be a really good hockey move but business move I personally can’t see them considering such a move at this stage.

What am I missing here?

Kings decline. Kings aren't retaining 27M over the next 6 years for first-round picks that are not even this year and more long-term signed forwards who will join a log-jam of forward prospects.

The Kings likely won't have a competitive roster for at least the next 3 years. The retained salary will allow them to yield a larger return from Toronto and build towards the years where they can reach contention again. They want to move on from the Doughty contract and Toronto desperately needs that elite RHD.

Kings will be in the mix in two years with next year battling for the 8th seed. Retaining salary doesn't make sense on one your leaders on D. The Kings are getting their pipeline stocked already, they don't need all of those draft picks, Toronto will need them when they blow the team up after next year.

The Kings are not likely to be in the mix with how competitive the western conference is for the next few years. The picks will allow them to stockpile blue chip prospects in the early rounds with high potential in hopes that at least a few reach their potential. Those entry level contracts combined with Kopiter, Quick, Brown, and the rest of the core is how they will contend again.

You don't know the Kings roster well then. You can only do so much with picks until you have a glut of players. This next year will be to see what they have and get ready for the expansion draft. Many teams in the western conference will be taking a step back due to the salary cap. They have a ton of dead money coming off the books to make a big trade if needed. Toronto can keep their picks.

I do know the kings roster well. They will be stockpiling as many picks as they can in hopes to hit big. That is why Toronto who is built to win now makes for a great trade partner. You will be lauging when the kings win the cup in 23'
