I think I almost puked when I saw that Danault trade. That is just horrible for Montreal.

Without an extension, what are you expecting? That's slightly less than what Buffalo got for O'Reilly, which is fitting because O'Reilly had 5 years on his contract and is a much better player.
With an extension agreed upon? Maybe he gets an additional piece, but he'd never get Cozens or BUF 2020 1st, and Buffalo's 2021 1st doesn't figure to be much worse than their 2020 1st.

What do you think he would get? He is UFA at year end.

Remember MITTELSTADT was 8th overall in 2017. He is trending in a downward direction, but he is still only 21 years old. That is still a nice prospect to pick up.

An extension will likely be included in the trade. Danault is worth a lot right now. With an extension, he is easily worth a mid first and a good prospect. I think that he could even fetch pick 10 from Winnipeg tbh.

Oh with an extension that is an entirely different story. He could definitely get more than this with a long term extension.

Ryan O'Reilly didn't get that much. Late 1st, solid B- prospect, sure. Depends on the contract.

That doesn't mean Danault is going to get more. He's not nearly as good. Especially if he's forcing Montreal's hand with his contract demands.

How about the exact same trade. However the 2022 3rd is conditional. If Danault resigns the 2022 3rd turns into a 2022 1st (top 10 protected, pick would get transferred to 2023 in that case)

I think MTL would want quality over quantity. They won’t trade him unless they get a blue chip asset.

I'm not sure but in another ACGM post it was said with the new CBA you can't do that

If he is so good why is he being traded? The two young guys had a strong playoff and now he is expendable? It makes no sense...I'd take Derek Ryan over him bc he would come way cheaper and you would get the same production. Ryan played with stiffs compared to what Danault had as wingers and played 4th line minutes and only scored 18 pts less. He's a good defensive player but I don't see an offensive upside to him and that's what the Sabres need in a 2C which in time will hopefully turn into a 3C when Cozens establishes himself as a 2C.
