Canes trade with Jets and Leafs

Description
Not sure if adding Dzingel helps or hurts this offer from Canes. I think it helps if Jets believe Dzingel is likely to rebound as a 20 goal scorer (esp with just $3.3 mil @ 1 year remaining).

Canes would prefer to move Gardiner, but assuming he's more of a salary dump and won't bring back much given his performance last season. If they can't move Gardiner and if they really want a top-6 winger, then Skjei makes a ton of sense as the trade bait. Canes may not love idea of Fleury in top 4, but paired with Pesce I think it works.

Toronto may not actually want to keep Mrazek, but might flip him in another trade if they are looking to sign a UFA goalie. McGinn for Andreas also helps Leafs with reducing their cap while getting a more physical and one of Canes best PKers. Canes only have one year left on McGinn contract and may want to get younger and more offensive upside since they already have similar bottom six guys such as Martinook and Foegele. Letting go of McGinn would be hard honestly.

People overvalue Ehlers a lot but he’s worth more than that

That deal is terrible for the Leafs.
They get worse in net and worse on the wing... with nothing else coming back.
Why would they ever consider this?

I agree the value is off. I guess the value the leafs would get is cap space. I’d say maybe the canes add like a 3rd rounder and the deal looks a more balanced to me

Canes would need to add significantly to the jets deal. Probably a first and a prospect

Yeah, that's understandable. I'm not totally sold on this idea. If you read the description, you'll see my thinking on this scenario. Leafs would be making some cap space for themselves and they'd either have Mrazek as a backup or trade him once they sign their new #1 goalie. I think McGinn would be perfect fit for Leafs and what they need to be a more physical team that's harder to play against. And again, he's cheaper.

You're saying Elhers is worth Skjei (top 4 puck moving Dman), plus Dzingel, plus a prospect, and a 1st rd pick? Seems like a lot.

What if Canes also sent a 2nd or 3rd pick? Is that closer?

Yes. Skjei doesnt have a ton of value nor does Dzingle. I like Skjei but i think the canes overpaid for him because of the pressure at the deadline. Ehlers is a true top line winger. I think a package like Skjei, Dzingle, 2021 first may get it done. The prospect if needed would be a B level prospect likely

You're not wrong that Canes overpaid for Skjei at the deadline. I don't think Canes would do a 1st, but maybe a 2nd (they have 2 this year). I think if Jets just want a mid level prospect, Canes might throw it one in - they've shown a willingness to do that recently. As long as it's not one of their top 5. Your counter proposal isn't as crazy as it seemed to me at first.

I mean Ehlers is just a really underrated player its going to take a ton to get him
