buch trades
I don't think Canes will trade Morrow. But they'd have to consider this. Buch on a line with Aho and Svech for this season and next?! That'd be fun. I suspect Blues would want the Canes first pick and I think that's still fair trade.

He'll be fine. He's outplayed Drury all year.</div></div>
Brind'Amour disagrees with you. Look at the playing time of Drury vs KK since January.
Here are the number of shifts and Time on Ice of Drury versus KK in recent games:
Against Columbus:
Drury 17 shifts, TOI 16 mins
KK 13 shifts, TOI 10 mins
Against Minnesota:
Drury 17 shifts, TOI 15 mins
KK 14 shifts, TOI 9 mins
Against Vegas:
Drury 19 shifts, TOI 14 mins
KK 15 shifts, TOI 9 mins

KK's the 4th line center now because Drury has outplayed him. And KK's still underperforming as a 4C - he should be getting favorable matchups and he's not doing much with those. He's still young but Canes made a bad decision to extend him long term.

I'd love to see Canes swing bigger on 2C upgrade. But that would almost certainly mean they can't afford to add Buch too.

Now is the time. Jarvis needs a big raise next season. We're losing both Skjei and Pesce after this season. Necas needs a big raise and more likely will be traded because of his inconsistencies. Turbo and Chatfield are UFAs too. Slavin and Burns aren't getting younger. NOW is precisely the time to go for it. Our late first round picks aren't as valuable as you think.

I'd rather win the cup than win all the trades. At some point, Canes need to push chips in and go for it even if it means overpaying a little.

Necas has mostly been missing in the playoffs and doesn't drive play. His game isn't really built for the playoffs - he's a perimeter player and he struggles without time/space and in more physical games.
At the same time, he only costs $3mil right now. If I were moving Necas in a trade now, I'd package him with a 1st/2nd draft pick or prospect and go for a higher tier player if possible.

I think Canes are fine on bottom six. I really think KK is more a 3C than a 2C (but would be happy to be wrong). The whole premise of this trade is that upgrading at 2C makes the whole lineup that much better. Canes need to accept that once in a while overpaying is the right move when you're in a Cup window. This year is critical because next season means raises for whole bunch players on reasonable and cheap contracts. 2C has been this team's biggest weakness for several years now.

LOL, ok! This whole trade is based on Flames starting to rebuild because guys on expiring contracts are not re-signing with the team. It's not about Pesce being a need, but that they could get a huge haul for him at the TDL. Drury is definitely depth player now, but there's a lot of upside there.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Kotkaniemi was fine at 2C last year, don't need Lindholm, who I've argued before is not an upgrade. He's a 60 point 2C, which is fine, but Kotkaniemi was on a 60 point pace in the New Year. No reason to lose all these assets for production that's already on the roster. It makes more sense to keep Pesce and target Backlund for 3C, pushing the Martinook - Staal - Fast line down to the 4th.</div></div>
I agree that KK improved over the second half of the season. I don't like gambling on that continuing. I think Lindholm is enough of an upgrade to warrant the cost. I don't love Staal as the 4C either, but this is forward depth down the middle and makes EVERY line a threat. That's how teams win cups IMO.

Meier 23-24
I think something like this makes a ton of sense for both teams, but price only works if Canes are able to extend Meier. Maybe the 2nd pick is conditional to Meier signing?
Canes have a window and need a move like this now and someone who'll at least be back next season. A big additional long term contract though will likely mean that the Canes won't be able to sign extension to somebody among Pesce, Skjei, Turbo, Jarvis, or Necas.

I don't think Canes should give a single 1st round pick for Kane, let alone all of that. I'd consider Drury and a second - maybe. But otherwise, Kane isn't really what the team needs.

Horvat to Canes
I'd like to see Necas at center as well, but since he hasn't played there even with Aho out, I just don't think RBA wants him there (guessing faceoff is biggest issue). If it's clear neither KK nor Necas are going to be 2C this season, what's the team going to do?

I’m all for adding Chychrun, within reason, but not at the expense of dealing away a top 4 D.</div></div>
And Skjei been great this season - his best as a Cane. There's just no scenario where Canes are sending away Slavin, Pesce, Skjei, or TDA this season. They want to acquire another D and move TDA to 3rd pair and let him specialize in offensive zone starts and PP.

Lekhonen and McKeown for more depth
McKeown has had a couple of stints with the Canes and he's always looked really solid in a 3rd pairing role. He doesn't have high ceiling, but he kind of reminds me of someone like Trevor van Riemsdyk. I'm kind of surprised Canes haven't given him more opportunities. I wouldn't be surprised to see him traded in a deal like this or as a piece of a larger deal.

I think Canes would accept this if they are looking for a change in net. Leafs could probably get a 3rd, maybe even a 2nd if Canes don't retain salary. For a 4th, Canes might retain even more like $1.5 mil.

Canes accept.
Gardiner isn't a great fit on Canes, but could still work somewhere else. He's not fast and that's his biggest issue, especially on a team that emphasized speed and aggressiveness. But I think with the right partner and system he'll bring value.
