Description
Let me know what you think Gardiner's going price would be. This saves them cap to get a better goalie, perhaps sign Markstrom on the open market if they offload Mrazek or Reimer. For the Oil, I really like this 3rd line. Fast.

Gardiner hasn't been good in a few years...The 3rd is probably enough.

Fair, tbh Chiasson was just a salary offset. I think Gardiner could do well playing with a steady defensive guy like Larsson, but I haven't watched enough of him to know for sure. He sure did drop off in minutes last year...was unsure if just a bad fit with too many dmen in Carolina or if he really was not playing well at all.

I’d imagine EDM is on Gardiner’s 7 team NTC...

Why are you trading for a 30 year old guy with 3 years left who plays 3rd pairing? You do know that Klefbom - if he decides to have surgery - will only be out 6 months, right? Three of which are likely off-season anyhow? And that Edmonton has several LHD prospects that will be pushing for a roster spot in 2021?

I don't understand the logic here.

So as a canes fan, is he a dman you would trade to try and make space for a true number 1 goalie? Or how would you go about that?

Klef will be out the entire season, or at least should be if the team is smart. Personally, if Gardiner plays well enough, I look to trade Nurse for a top line winger next offseason. Nurse will be overpayed on his next contract (and yes I like Nurse, but I think the end result would be better asset management).

Also he plays 3rd pairing in Carolina. Best D in the league. EDM is not the best lol, he is a second pair on a normal d corps.

im cool with your original deal. Although Gardiner probably wouldnt be. I didnt understand what this NHLFAN was talking about him not being good for a few years.

At this point, Im not sure we go fishing for the number one. I dont know what we do, if anything. Making a play for Markstrom would be nice but, we seem to adverse to committing to a goalie long term.

It's interesting that Oilers fans have already decided that Nurse will be overpaid on his next contract when his current 2-year deal hasn't even started yet. Did they not bother to build schools in northern Alberta?

Yes, I do realize that, I am talking about trading him with 1 year left so his value higher for a team to get a 5.6 mil season out of him. Increases what the Oil could get back, I would hope for an Ehlers type. Also, if he becomes a 50 point plus dman, then the plan changes. This is a snapshot in time plan bud.

The number 1 reason Edmonton has sucked for so long is that they keep trading players as they get to the 25-27 age range. You're proposing more of the same. Hello darkness my old friend!

Well, my proposal is to get back a 25-27 age player who at a position of more need than LHD for us (when/if Klef is healthy). Yes, trading a Petry or Schultz for mid picks is dumb, will always be dumb. Nowhere in here do I advocate for that absurdity. Perhaps take a look at the whole plan. Would you rather a LHD of Klef, Gardiner and Brobeg with Ehlers on McD's wing, or Nurse Klef Broberg with likely a lot less cap moving forward if Nurse is demanding 7 mil or more on his next impending deal. From what we know today on Nurse, I take the first. But if he becomes a true top pair D, I will be very happy to choose the latter. Will depend on his trajectory.

oh so Toronto fans who notoriously overreact since 1968 are the barometer for how well a player plays? Good to know.

Yea game 7 vs Boston, sit him.

Gardnier is perfectly fine player , he is high risk but agreed partnered with Larsson that risk should go down, great stretch passer etc. I think there would be more to the deal, something like Mzarek Gardnier to the Oil and Chaisson + to the Canes

Mrazek would work, but the Oil would need the canes to take back more cap too. Not swimming in Cap space.

Not really it would be tight but anything a step up on Smith will make it very tight

Sure, but we're talking a 5 mil cap disparity here in the trade compared to my original 2 mil proposal. It's still a trade, compensation is always in question. Could be in the form of picks though, I could see that.

Canes accept.

Gardiner isn't a great fit on Canes, but could still work somewhere else. He's not fast and that's his biggest issue, especially on a team that emphasized speed and aggressiveness. But I think with the right partner and system he'll bring value.

If Nurse is worth $7M, I'd pay him that and keep him. I don't like Gardiner, he can't play defense.
