Boston Offseason Realistic

Created by: chapplez
Team: 2020-21 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 19, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A bit more realistic of an offseason - with the signing of Debrusk and Grzelcyk, Pietrangelo or another really big name UFA is off the table. This team won the President's Trophy just last year, depth scoring/defense is all they need to add.

Some might question the Merrill and Smith signings -> Merrill is a solid defensive defenseman whose team controls the puck (53% corsi last year) when he is on the ice. Solid for 3rd pairing, but can handle 2nd pairing minutes too (avg 18 mins on ice last season with VEG).
As for Smith, he gives you about 20 goals a season as a 2nd/3rd liner, absolutely spectacular Corsi and Fenwick numbers, and is consistently on the ice for more goals than against. Although he only posted 31 points last year, Nashville's offense struggled. I think this could be a sneaky signing for Boston that could really help their forward core.

Goaltending is solid for another year, so no real need to pursue anyone there. If Rask wants out, then Boston could go to the FA market.

i think with the flat cap and reports of internal operating budgets, teams may not take on cap dumps like Moore for as cheap as a 5th

Craig Smith is good, but not really better than Kase. I'd rather take that money and sign a better LD, and/or extend DeBrusk a bit longer while slightly upping the term as well.

Worst case scenario and they can't move him, Boston still has 2.6 ish in cap space with this scenario. If they push Lauzon down to AHL, they could keep Moore if necessary and try to rebuild his value.

With his cap hit a 5th would be enough if he had 1 season left on his contract but he has 3 seasons left and he is almost 30 so I think fair compensation is probably a 3rd and it should be the same year as the pick Boston gets from Detroit.

Wow so we take a cap dump off your hands for a future player that more then likely will never play for Detroit. And we do this why?

I thought about extending Debrusk longer, but it seems both sides are more interested in a bridge deal. I took a look at Tanev, Vatanen, and Brodie for example, but they all project to ask for more than 5.5. I think this setup helps balance the roster a little more, but your points are fair.

Moore was healthy in August - he could have played in the 2020 playoffs but the coaches did not want to throw him in like that off an injury. More than likely he plays in 2020-21, the question is just what team. As stated by others, a 3rd is probably better compensation, but the trade was just to get the point across. I could see Winnipeg additionally being interested given the state of their D-core.

I get that if it’s just a straight up non NHL player with a big contract. Moore is probably 500K overpaid. Solid player.

How is Merrill at 3 years 2.7 any different than Moore at 3 for 2.75. They are basically the same player.

I think the issue is then next year when you have to sign Carlo and Kase for money that's sitting on an aging Smith. Sure, Krejci's contract is off the books, but you either need him or equivalent production back regardless.

What an overpay for Merrill and he isn't a regular top4. Not enough $ for Smith and hard to tell what kind of contract he'll get but he could probably get at least 4-5 years in the $4Ms. Good deals for the RFAs/Chara. Kase on the 4th line?????
